Biography
Richard Gyamfi Boakye is a conservation scientist with over 18 years of experience in nature conservation, research, and program management. He holds a Ph.D. in Ecology (Agri-Environmental Science) and an M.Sc. in Environmental Resource Management from University College Dublin, Ireland. He also holds an MSc in Development Policy and Planning from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana.
Richard has led participatory conservation initiatives in West Africa particularly in Ghana, coordinating projects in landscape ecology, biodiversity monitoring, protected areas management, community engagement, sustainable livelihoods development, and human-wildlife conflict mitigation. He has conducted field research in both Ghana and Ireland. His achievements include facilitating the establishment of 10 Community Resource Management Areas (CREMAs) in Ghana, coordinated beekeeping livelihood programs that support over rural 300 farmers near protected areas and restoring native tree cover in degraded areas within protected areas.
At the Institute for Integrative Conservation (IIC), Richard oversees the Conservation Research Program (CRP) by helping to design student learning objectives, mentor students in applied conservation research, manage field logistics, and facilitate collaborations with local and international partners. He is passionate about linking science with practice, empowering students, and supporting underrepresented voices in conservation.
