Biography

Erica Garroutte (she/her) was born and raised in Colorado, where her passion of conserving the environment and its connection to human well-being began. Erica is passionate about building relationships with and supporting local communities with their work to conserve their environments and its benefits to their community and us all. Integrating lessons learned from her master’s degree in Landscape Ecology and 15 years of experience working alongside local communities on conservation initiatives in Colorado, East Africa, Mongolia, New Mexico, and Montana, Erica is passionate about building bridges across sectors, disciplines and among communities to advance conservation solutions.

As the IIC’s research program manager, Erica oversees our efforts to match W&M faculty, students, and external conservation partners to conduct applied research needed to advance integrative conservation outcomes. Erica leads a lab for student researchers and co-teaches a One Health course with Dr. Iyabo Obasanjo. She is a  Professional Affiliate of the W&M Interdisciplinary Studies Program.
