Private giving helps to provide the margin of excellence for Applied Science. With private funds, we can provide for our students and carry out research at a much higher level than we would be able to do with public funds alone.
Private support given at the departmental level can make an enormous difference in the kind of learning experience we offer to our students. Our current level of excellence is the result of a financial model that blends public and private support. This model relies on the contributions of alumni, parents, friends, and grant-funding partners.
State monies fund an operations budget that covers basic and incidental expenses involved in teaching students. Equipment for laboratories, travel, supplies for student projects – these kinds of expenses are paid from budgets that were frozen a decade ago and since that time the percentage contribution of state appropriations has been in a steady downward trend, reaching 17.3 percent in Fiscal Year 2003-04.
That W&M has continued to perform so well is due in large part to private support. Contributions made at the departmental level are used to fund a wide range of equipment, teaching, curricular, and other areas that benefit our students directly. Gifts can also be designated for specific initiatives at the department level or even within particular research groups.
We encourage you to visit the various Applied Science web pages and learn more about how private support is already making a difference. If you see a match with your own values, and decide you would like to advance your values through a contribution, we thank you for your support.
