Laws and Policies

In addition to having its own policies related to hazing, William & Mary falls under the jurisdiction of state and federal laws related to hazing.  The Hazing Prevention Coalition works to ensure that hazing prevention efforts are aligned with university policies as well as Commonwealth and federal laws.

William & Mary Policies Related to Hazing and Student Safety

University Policy on Hazing

  • William & Mary is committed to promoting a safe and healthy living, learning, and working environment to further its educational mission. Hazing is a harmful and unproductive activity that threatens the well-being of students, faculty, and staff and is antithetical to the university’s values, including respect and belonging.
  • The purpose of this policy is to prohibit and prevent hazing and to respond to it when it occurs. Hazing has no place at this university, and it is the responsibility of the entire campus community to encourage an atmosphere of learning, social responsibility, and respect for human dignity, ensuring that William & Mary is a Home Without Hazing.

Good Griffin Policy

  • Student health and safety are of primary concern at the university. As such, in cases of significant intoxication as a result of alcohol or other substances, the university encourages individuals to seek medical assistance for themselves or others.
  • If medical assistance is sought for consumption of alcohol or other substances, SARP will not pursue conduct allegations under the Student Code of Conduct; however, Student Affairs staff will meet with the student and apply educational measures. Exemption from student conduct allegations will be provided to the student for whom medical attention was sought and any witnesses who were present.

Commonwealth of Virginia Laws

Anti-Hazing Law

  • Defines hazing as, "recklessly or intentionally endanger the health or safety of a student or students or to inflict bodily injury on a student or students in connection with or for the purpose of initiation, admission into or affiliation with or as a condition for continued membership in a club, organization, association, fraternity, sorority, or student body regardless of whether the student or students so endangered or injured participated voluntarily in the relevant activity."

Adam's Law

  • Enacted in 2022, following the death of Adam Oakes at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2021.
  • Requires institutions of higher education to provide anti-hazing education.
  • Mandates that universities maintain public reports of hazing violations to increase transparency to students and families.

Federal Law

Stop Campus Hazing Act

  • Requires institutions of higher education to report hazing incidents.
  • Defines hazing to mean any intentional, knowing, or reckless act committed by a person (whether individually or in concert with other persons) against another person or persons regardless of the willingness of such other person or persons to participate, that (1) is committed in the course of an initiation into, an affiliation with, or the maintenance of membership in, a student organization (e.g., a club, athletic team, fraternity, or sorority); and (2) causes or creates a risk, above the reasonable risk encountered in the course of participation in the IHE or the organization, of physical or psychological injury.
  • Requires institutions to include information about hazing in its annual security report and to develop a campus hazing transparency report that summarize findings concerning any student organization to be found in violation of the institution's standards of conduct related to hazing.
