Coalition Structure and Membership

The Hazing Prevention Coalition is comprised of members of the William & Mary community from across campus, including students, faculty, and staff.  There are four different types of engagement in the Coalition allowing individuals to get involved in ways that feel meaningful to them.

HPC structure description

Steering Committee

Overview: The Steering Committee is responsible for the ongoing operations of the Hazing Prevention Coalition including the execution of programs and initiatives such as National Hazing Prevention Week, hazing prevention workshops, and campus/community outreach. The group is responsible for the cohesive planning and execution of W&M’s scaffold hazing prevention curriculum and implementation of the Strategic Framework for Hazing Prevention at W&M..  

Responsibilities/Expectations: 

  • Participate in monthly Steering Committee meetings 
  • Participate in monthly Collaboration meetings (may be asked to present/report out) 
  • Participate in twice-a-semester meeting with the full Coalition (champions, collaborators, and steering committee) 
  • Serve on a working group and lead a project/program/initiative 

Time Commitment: 

  • 5-10 hours a month, dependent on project/program/initiative 
  • Includes three hours of regular standing monthly meetings 
  • Co-chairs should expect to spend an additional 5-10 hours a month  

Collaborators

Overview: The group will serve as a sounding board to the steering committee, providing feedback and engaging in ideation activities which will guide the development of programs and initiative for the Hazing Prevention Coalition.  Collaborators may be asked to provide additional support in the development and execution of programs and initiatives on an ad hoc basis.   

Responsibilities/Expectations: 

  • Participate in monthly Collaboration meetings (may be asked to present/report out) 
  • Participate in twice-a-semester meetings with the full Coalition (champions, collaborators, and steering committee) 
  • Serve on a working group and lead a project/program/initiative (as needed) 

Time Commitment:  

  • 2-5 hours a month, dependent on project/program/initiative 
  • Includes one hour of regular standing monthly meetings 

Champions - Faculty/Staff

Overview: The group will gather twice a semester to hear updates from the Steering Committee and Collaborators on hazing prevention efforts at W&M.  Champions will be valuable partners in helping the Coalition connect to opportunities, offices, and individuals across campus (and beyond) that can help advance hazing prevention efforts at W&M. 

Responsibilities/Expectations: 

  • Participate in twice-a-semester meetings with the full Coalition (champions, collaborators, and steering committee) 
  • Communicate with the co-chairs throughout the year, sharing resources, identifying opportunities, and facilitating introductions that help advance hazing prevention efforts 
  • Advocate for the on-going hazing prevention efforts at W&M 

Time Commitment: 

  • 2-3 hours each semester 

Champions - Students

Overview: Student Champions serve on the Student Action Group which will be focused on strategic peer-to-peer engagement. Additionally, they will participate in meetings twice a semester to hear updates from the Steering Committee and Collaborators on hazing prevention efforts at W&M.  Champions will be valuable partners in helping the Coalition connect to opportunities, offices, and individuals across campus (and beyond) that can help advance hazing prevention efforts at W&M.   

Responsibilities/Expectations: 

  • Participate in twice-a-semester meetings with the full Coalition (champions, collaborators, and steering committee) 
  • Participate in monthly Student Action Group meetings 
  • Provide assistance at outreach initiatives, such as tabling and workshop introductions 
  • Assist in the facilitation and delivery of educational programming and development of resources 
  • Communicate with the co-chairs throughout the year, sharing resources, identifying opportunities, and facilitating introductions that help advance hazing prevention efforts 
  • Advocate for the on-going hazing prevention efforts at W&M 

Time Commitment: 

  • 2-3 hours each month
