Leadership Support for Digital Accessibility at W&M

The following email was sent by Provost Peggy Agouris to all faculty on September 15, 2025.

Subject: Commitment to Digital Accessibility at William & Mary – What Faculty Need to Know

Dear colleagues,

In accordance with the university’s mission and core values, William & Mary works to prevent and remove barriers to access across academic programs. This applies not only to physical spaces but also to digital environments where teaching and engagement occur. W&M’s proactive approach aligns with Virginia state law and the digital accessibility regulation issued by the Department of Justice under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The rule established the Web Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) Level 2.1 AA as the standard for digital accessibility, requiring state and local governments to meet these guidelines by April 2026. Learn more about how the university has advanced this initiative by forming the Title II Working Groups.

Faculty’s Role in Digital Accessibility

Faculty play a key role in developing inclusive learning environments. Making your online course accessible is not only required, but it also benefits students with disabilities and enhances usability for everyone. For accommodations to be effective, course content must already be accessible.
Resources and Support
  • Accessibility training and office hours: Join us for hands-on training sessions and weekly office hours led by W&M’s digital accessibility specialist. These sessions will help you navigate accessibility tools, address your questions, and ensure your course content meets necessary standards.
  • Digital Accessibility Quick Bites: For on-demand, practical tips, don’t miss the Quick Bites series, hosted by STLI and W&M Libraries. These short, focused sessions are designed to help you make small yet impactful changes to your digital materials with ease.
  • Departmental Roadshows: Personalized support is also available through departmental one-on-ones. Schedule a session with our experts for guidance tailored to the unique needs of your department or courses.
  • Digital Accessibility Website: W&M’s online hub that includes the digital accessibility policy, resource guides, tips, events and more.
