DOJ Update: Digital Accessibility ADA Title II Extension
Dear colleagues,
Following our recent message regarding the April 24 digital accessibility milestone, we want to share an important update on compliance timelines.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has issued an interim final rule extending the federal ADA Title II digital accessibility compliance deadline. For William & Mary, this moves the federal timeline to April 2027.
We are currently assessing how this federal extension may impact Virginia’s compliance timeline.
It is important to emphasize that this extension does not change expectations or the work that is already underway. The technical standard and scope remain the same under WCAG 2.1 AA, and digital accessibility remains an ongoing responsibility. The DOJ has indicated that this change is intended to support more meaningful and effective compliance, allowing institutions to focus less on legal interpretation and more on making real improvements that benefit individuals with disabilities.
This additional time allows us to be deliberate in how we strengthen accessibility across our digital environment, with a focus on sustainable, long-term practices. We will continue to share updates, including any additional guidance related to state requirements, as more information becomes available.
Thank you for your continued commitment and partnership in this work.
With appreciation,
