Ayanna Williams made history in November 2024 by becoming the first Black woman and the first actively enrolled undergraduate student to be elected to the Williamsburg City Council. Originally from Chesterfield County, Virginia, Ayanna has long been connected to Williamsburg, frequently visiting family in the area. Her deep appreciation for the community inspired her to run for office, aiming to be a connection point between the university and the city. Her campaign emphasized inclusive representation, affordable housing and environmental sustainability.
At William & Mary, Ayanna has been actively involved in student governance, serving as the undersecretary of finance for the Student Assembly and as vice president of finance for the Consulting Club. These roles honed her skills in budgeting and organizational leadership, which she brings to her work on the city council. Ayanna’s election underscores the university's commitment to civic engagement and highlights the impact students can have on local governance. As she continues her term, she remains dedicated to fostering connections between the university and the broader Williamsburg community.
