Alcohol & Other Substances
When considering healthy relationships, there is one that college students sometimes fail to address. Your relationship with alcohol, tobacco, and other substances can potentially influence your ability to engage in healthy behaviors. Ultimately, it comes down to informed choices, and below are some of our resources to help you make those decisions wisely.
| Alcohol | Alcohol may be used in a healthy manner or in a way that causes problems, including addiction. Though legal to consume at 21, it's not risk-free. Federal and State law, as well as W&M policy, prohibit the use of alcohol to those under the age of 21. |

| Events with Alcohol Training | Student organizations planning an event with alcohol are required to have one representative present who has completed this training. Event planning meetings are also required. |
| Cannabis | Though legalized in certain forms in Virginia, Federal law still prohibits the use, possession, or cultivation of cannabis. As a federally funded institution, we remain in compliance with the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act. |
| REVIVE! Naloxone Training | In partnership with the Virginia Department of Health, we provide an Opioid Overdose and Naloxone Education program. This training helps you to identify an opioid overdose and administer Naloxone in the event of an emergency. |
| Smoking and Tobacco | Smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease and is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths per year in the United States. Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body and is linked to cancer, heart disease, and more. |
| Substance Abuse | Our shared commitment to wellbeing means that together, we help each other make good choices. Navigating substance abuse can be a complex process that requires support, understanding, and access to resources. |
