Employee Onboarding

New Employee Orientation for Departments

The new employee orientation process has three components:

  • Benefits Orientation
  • University Orientation
  • Campus Tour
Resources for Onboarding New Employees:
Prior to the first day of employment

New employees are encouraged to review the I-9 requirements online and complete Section 1 of the I-9 using www.newi9.com. A link to this online website should have been provided to the new employee, in the offer letter or by the hiring manager/department. On the employee's first day, they are asked to show up for work with the appropriate identification. Departments have the ability to complete Section 2 or schedule an appointment (AskHr@wm.edu) with University Human Resources to complete Section 2.

New employees are also encouraged to complete the payroll forms that are turned in during the Benefits Orientation. Federal and Virginia tax forms are completed online via Banner Self Service.

As always, University Human Resources staff are available to assist employees with the completion of the new hire paperwork.

The first day of employment

The process of orientation begins with the department. On this day, the department should:

  • welcome the new employee;
  • familiarize them to their new work area;
  • introduce departmental personnel.

Departmental checklists may be useful in providing a good overview of what information could be reviewed with the new employee beginning on the first day.

The new employee should mark their calendar with the date, time and location of the appropriate Benefits, University Orientation and Campus Tours they will attend.

Supervisors 30, 60, and 90 days check-in conversations

As part of the improvement and engagement process supervisors should encourages employees to take the 30, 60, or 90 days check-ins. To aid supervisors in evaluating and responding to the new employee’s check-in, they can use these 30, 60, or 90 days interval lists found in Cornerstone. These are designed to help the employee's relationship with supervisor and the W&M community.
