National Resources

Crisis Hotlines

  • Suicide and Crisis HotlineContact for access to free, confidential, one-on-one assistance. Hotline is available if support is needed for mental health struggles, emotional distress, alcohol or drug use concerns, or if you need someone to talk to:
  • Crisis Text LineProvides free, 24/7, high-quality text-based mental health support and crisis intervention by empowering a community of trained volunteers to support people in their moments of need.

Non-Crisis Helplines & Resources

  • NAMI HelpLine: Free nationwide peer-support service for individuals or family members/caregivers; Not a hotline, crisis line or suicide prevention line.
    • Available Monday Through Friday, 10:00 AM - 10:00 PM ET

  • YouthLinefree peer-to-peer help, support, and crisis line for youth up to age 24.
  • Therapist Locators: Use these tools to find a therapist near you.  
  • LifeStance HealthMatches patients with clinicians (e.g., psychiatrists, psychologists, and licensed therapists).
    • Offers in-person and remote appointments. Accepts most major insurance plans.

Resources for Members of the LGBTQ+ Community

  • TrevorLifeline for LGBTQ Youth 
    • You’ll be connected to a Trevor counselor who is understanding of LGBTQ issues and won’t judge you. Your conversation will be anonymous, and you can share as much or as little as you like. 
    • Online chat, text, and call available
  • LGBT National Hotline
    • All volunteers identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ family and serve the entire community by providing free & confidential peer support, information, and local resources through national hotlines and online programs.

  • LGBT National Youth Hotline 
    • Provides confidential, peer support, information, and resources to callers ages 25 or younger

  • LGBT National Senior Hotline
    • Provides confidential, peer support, information, and resources to callers ages 50 or older
    • Hotline open for limited hours - check website before calling.  
  • Trans Lifeline 
    • Peer support phone service run by trans people for our trans and questioning peers. Call us if you need someone trans to talk to, even if you’re not in a crisis or if you’re not sure you’re trans.

Williamsburg or William & Mary Resources 

  • Colonial Behavioral Health (1657 Merrimac Trail, Williamsburg, VA 23185)
    • Mission is to facilitate recovery and resiliency of individuals and families affected by mental illness, developmental disabilities, and substance use disorders.
    • Cost of Assessment: $150
    • Sliding Scale and Fee reduction available
  • W&M New Leaf Clinic (W&M Students only)
    • Counseling provided by doctoral and master’s students under the supervision of faculty or doctoral students.
  • W&M Health & Wellness Counseling Center (W&M Students only)
    • Offers a range of mental health services to students wanting help with personal concerns. Free for full-time students.
  • W&M Employee Assistance Program (W&M Employees only)
    • EAP counselors are available to assist employees with problems related to addictions (alcohol, drugs, gambling), health, finances, housing, childcare, elder care, spousal/child/parent abuse, workplace, retirement, family, legal, mental health, grief, or career planning.
