IRB Membership Requirements

IRB Requirements per HHS regulation 45 CFR 46.107:

  1. at least 5 members with "varying backgrounds"
  2. make every nondiscriminatory effort to ensure that the membership is not composed of entirely men or entirely women
  3. at least one member whose primary concerns are in scientific areas
  4. at least one member whose primary concerns are in nonscientific areas;
  5. at least one member who is not affiliated with the institution in any capacity
  6. Any members who has a conflicting interest with the protocol(s) under review should not participate in the initial or subsequent reviews of those protocols

The Committee provides the Provost, in May of each year, with a report of its activities and recommendations for Committee membership for the following year.

With the approval of the Vice Provost for Research, the Committee Chair may appoint temporary replacement committee members during those times when the university is not in regular session.

Academic Year 2026-27

  • Summer 2026: Only as needed
  • Fall 2026: TBD
  • Spring 2027: TBD

Ad Hoc Members

Ad hoc members are used by the IRB when subject-matter expertise is required. These members do not count towards the quorum.
