Variable Credits & Auditing

Students can use PATH for many actions including updating credit hours for a variable credit course. Students seeking to audit a course may not select audit through PATH. Details about each are listed below.

Note that you must also visit the Registrar's Office to take a course at a different level than that indicated on the course.

Changing the Credit Hours on a Variable Credit Course

If you register for a course that is variable credit (ex. from 1.00 to 3.00 credit hours), you may select the number of credit hours you want. PATH will automatically register you for the minimum number of credit hours allowed for the course, unless you select a different amount.

Please note that updating the credit hours for a variable credit course is only available through the add/drop window. You only need to complete these steps if you are taking the course for more than the minimum number of credit hours allowed or wish to change the amount of credit hours you registered for.

Step-by-step Instructions

Log in to PATH and select the course to open the course details panel for the CRN
Select the Edit Registration Options button
When the Registration Options panel appears, use the credit hours drop-down menu to select how many credits you wish to take (i.e. 1 to 3 credit hours)
Select the Save Changes button to save the updated credit hours selection. (If you are updating the credit hours for the course during the cart-building period, this will be the end of the process.)
If you are updating the credit hours during the add/drop period, select the Submit Schedule and Submit Registration buttons
- If successful, a message indicating "This class has been modified" will display. Open the course details panel for the course to review the updated number of credit hours listed in the Registration Notes section

Missed the add/drop deadline to update your credit hours for a variable credit course? Eligible students may submit a request to the University Registrar's Office for a late change to the credit hours for their variable credit course.

Audit Status

You may not select Audit as a course option via PATH. To audit a course, undergraduate students must complete the Permission to Audit (pdf) form. Graduate students, please contact the Graduate Registrar or the academic administration office for your school/program of study.
