Overrides

Instructors or departments may use registration restrictions to control enrollment in courses. They may also award registration overrides to students to allow them to bypass those restrictions.

Overrides are only valid during your registration window and/or add/drop periods. They do not allow you to add the course after the registration window and/or add/drop period has ended. They do not allow you to register for a closed class or into a time conflict with another course. If you know a course requires Instructor Permission, obtain an override before registration begins!

Overrides do not automatically register you for the class. Instructors do not have the ability to register you for a class. It is your responsibility to add the class after you have received the override.

Common Types of Registration Overrides

Instructor Override

Overrides Pre-requisites, Special Approval (instructor permission required), Field of Study / Major, Student Attribute, Degree, Cohort, Class, College, and Campus. It will not allow a student to enter a closed course or register through a time conflict.

Viewing Your Registration Overrides

Go to myW&M
Select the Banner icon
Log in to Banner Self-Service with your W&M Username and password

myW&M

Select the Student tab
Select View My Schedules and Prepare for Registration
Select the Prepare for Registration link
Select the registration term from the drop-down menu, then select Continue. Only terms open for registration will be available to select; past terms will not display
Registration overrides display in the Permit Override section. If this section does not appear, an override has not been awarded yet
In the example image below, the student has received overrides in the Fall 2025 term for ECON 303 and GOVT 312

Before receiving an override, registration errors will display in the PATH Primary Cart
The Alternative Cart will not display errors even if there are registration restrictions. Registration errors only display in the Primary Cart
In the example image below, the PATH Primary Cart shows missing instructor approval for BIOL 455 and a prerequisite or test score error for ECON 303 and GOVT 312

After receiving an override, the registration errors disappear from the Primary Cart display
- Students may need to refresh and re-login to PATH after they receive an override for their Primary Cart to update
In the example image below, the student received overrides for both ECON 303 and GOVT 312, so those errors do not display. The student has not received an override for BIOL 455, so the registration error for that course continues to display
