Infrastructure

The Infrastructure team provides the university-wide network and voice communication platforms. This includes wired and wireless connectivity to campus users, those at remote sites, and within the university data centers. The team also oversees the campus telephone systems, cable TV infrastructure, the university's extensive underground cable plant, and coordinates efforts around technology in newly constructed spaces. They pride themselves on providing reliable, forward-looking solutions to communication challenges, while responding expeditiously to service interruptions.
Microsoft Teams
In 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the university set out to replace its aging Mitel telephone system with a modern system that would better support a mobile workforce. Leveraging our existing Microsoft licensing, and in partnership with our IT project management colleagues, IT Infrastructure led a campus-wide Microsoft Teams Calls rollout. This has included evaluating endpoints, deploying new carrier relationships, building new servers to support call routing, overhauling our billing practices and working with constituent departments to determine their needs. A pilot process has proven the technology to be successful, and rollout is under way during the summer and fall of 2022.

IT Infrastructure has worked with our Facilities Management colleagues on a number of capital projects. Specific new technologies include additional multicast capabilities and the Precision PTP support necessary for enhanced audio visual (AV) services.

Wireless Upgrades

While campus users enjoy high-speed, reliable Wifi service, upgrades are necessary to continue meeting service expectations. We have begun a seven-year replacement cycle, currently deploying the latest 802.11ax access points in both residence halls and academic buildings.

Science DMZ

In partnership with our Research Computing colleagues, and with funding from the National Science Foundation, IT Infrastructure is building out a Science DMZ network. This high-speed, research-oriented network will allow efficient transfer of large data sets across the institution.

Core Routing Upgrades

The campus backbone network is powered by Juniper MX routers. We are midway through a two-year replacement cycle. Our new routers will enable us to adopt faster interconnections and forward-looking network architectures well into the future.
