Applications Administration

The Applications Administration team provides systems administration, application support, business analysis, and project management for university software systems and processes. Most software solutions in use at the university are managed by the team and with their assistance and expertise, offices across campus are able to optimize and modernize operations and achieve strategic goals. They partner closely with other IT staff and end-users to identify business needs, evaluate technical solutions, maximize the return on investment in our technology assets and lead projects to realize change at the university.

The team is also responsible for troubleshooting reported problems, defining escalation paths, and coordinating with vendors, users, and other technical teams through issue resolution.

Cloud Initiative

To modernize existing applications and leverage new technology, the team recently migrated a couple of applications to hosted environments. They worked closely with university partners and the vendors' technical teams to transition existing applications and data to the cloud.

  • EMS is a room and resource scheduling application. It is used for classroom booking, event scheduling, space reservation, and other creative solutions for reserving resources. Our favorite example are the boats at VIMS.
  • Blue Course Evaluation is an application that delivers an adaptive and fully automated course evaluation process. It is currently used by Arts & Sciences, School of Education, School of Business, the Law School, and VIMS.
General Project Highlights
SendSuite by Pitney Bowes

SendSuite is tracking software used by postal services. The software upgrade allowed them to install a smart locker solution to improve their existing package pickup process.

Gmail Migration Project (Phase 1)

Phase One of the Gmail migration project was a collaborative effort between many people in IT. The app admin team worked on planning, testing, and executing the email transition of student, faculty, and staff accounts from Gmail to Microsoft O365. The email migration was completed in a 90-day window of time.

Kallaco

IT continued the management of Kallaco, working with the vendor to expand its capabilities to support health logistics for the university’s COVID-19 response. All students, employees and affiliates accessed Kallaco to manage COVID-19 related health records, including vaccinations and testing.
