IIC Welcomes Dr. Richard Gyamfi Boakye as Research Program Manager
Dr. Richard Gyamfi Boakye brings more than 18 years of experience as a conservation scientist, with deep expertise in integrative research and cross-sector conservation across diverse geographic contexts.
His work spans landscape ecology, biodiversity monitoring, community engagement, sustainable livelihoods, and protected areas management—particularly in Ghana and Ireland.
Throughout his career, Richard has led impactful initiatives, including the establishment of 10 Community Resource Management Areas (CREMAs) in Ghana, the support of over 300 rural farmers through sustainable beekeeping programs, human wildlife conflict mitigations, conservation education & awareness creation, and the restoration of native tree cover in degraded protected areas.
Richard holds a Ph.D. in Ecology (Agri-Environmental Science), as well as dual Master’s degrees in Environmental Resource Management and Development Policy & Planning.
His extensive experience in implementing collaborative conservation efforts makes him exceptionally well-suited to support the IIC’s mission to engage William & Mary students, faculty, and external partners in integrative conservation research and to help train the next generation of conservation leaders.
In his new role, Richard will lead the IIC’s Conservation Research Program (CRP) that engages W&M students, faculty, and external partners in applied research designed to address complex environmental conservation challenges. He will design student learning objectives, mentor students in fieldwork and integrative research, and foster partnerships that translate conservation knowledge into tangible action.
“W&M students are very lucky to get to work with and learn from Richard, and we are so thankful he has joined the IIC team,” says Director of Research Erica Garroutte. “Richard is not only an expert in integrative research who brings a valuable applied conservation perspective, but also a kind and committed mentor who supports students in both their professional and personal development as future conservation leaders.”
Richard is deeply passionate about bridging science and practice, empowering students, and uplifting underrepresented voices in the conservation field.
Please join us in giving a warm welcome to Dr. Richard Gyamfi Boakye as he joins the IIC and the William & Mary community!
