Legal Protective Orders

Protective orders are free and you do not need an attorney. For more information on types of protective orders, duration of protective orders, how to obtain a court issued protective order, refer to the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Service's Protective Orders Guide (pdf).

William & Mary Police can work with individual students to develop a personal safety plan and can assist you in seeking a protective order, if you would like to pursue one.

Counseling Center at William & Mary

The Counseling Center is the primary mental health service for the campus, and staff are on call 24 hours a day during the academic year to respond to psychological emergencies. including rape, sexual assault or other trauma.  Offices are llocated in the McLeod Tyler Wellness Center and open Monday-Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

The Student Health Center, located in the McLeod Tyler Wellness Center, provides a full-range of primary care services including the evaluation, treatment and prevention of all kinds of acute or chronic physical, mental and social health issues.  The Student Health Center provides pregnancy and STI screening and provides Plan B and other emergency contraception through its pharmacy. Please note that the Student Health Center does NOT provide PERK exams.

The Center for Sexual Assault Survivors is a local 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to creating a world that is free from sexual violence, intimate partner violence, and human trafficking.  All services are free and confidential to all.  They provide free crisis services to victims of sexual assault (both children and adults), their family members, friends, dating partners, and anyone else seeking services, related to overcoming sexual violence.

The Virginia Victims Fund (VVF) is a state program created to help victims of violent crime with out of pocket expenses. These can include medical bills, prescriptions, funeral expenses and many other expenses

How to Report Human Trafficking

The State Trafficking Response Coordinator within the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services establishes a consistent, collaborative, multi-disciplinary response system to working with human trafficking survivors. This includes responding to the case from both a victim services and legal perspective. The Coordinator collaborates with state and local government agencies, private providers, non-profits, and other NGOs throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Supportive Measures

Supportive measures are steps taken by the university to prevent retaliation, prevent continuation or recurrence of alleged misconduct, prevent the creation of (or remedy) a hostile or offensive environment, and ensure that all students are able to participate in the university's educational and other programs and activities.

Supportive measures can be taken even if you do not wish to file a formal complaint and participate in an investigation/conduct process. Some supportive measures can be taken without other people (including the respondent) knowing about them.  

Possible supportive measures include:

• No Contact/Communication Order - University issued directive that prohibits parties from intentional contact with one another.
• For Students, providing counseling services, including free services from the university Counseling Center or Student Health Center
• For employees, referrals to the EAP through your insurance program
• Making academic modifications (extension of due dates, change section, late withdraw)
• Changing office location or reporting lines
• Relocating classes
• Ensuring no one-on-one meetings with between the parties
• Changing residence location either permanently or temporarily

The university will maintain as confidential any supportive measures provided, to the extent possible. No-contact orders, for example must, by their nature, be disclosed to both the complainant and respondent.

Anonymous reporting options

• Anonymous reports may be filed physically using the secure dropbox located outside of the Office of Compliance & Equity on the first floor of James Blair Hall.  
• William & Mary Police, 757-221-4596, may accept anonymous reports of sexual assault, which will be included in the university's crime statistics if appropriate under the Clery Act. Please note that if you provide the police with specific information, such as names, they will be obligated to share that information with the Title IX Coordinator.  

Complainant Rights

William & Mary is committed to treating survivors with dignity and respect, therefore has established the following rights.

• The right to be treated with respect by university officials
• The right to confidentiality, to the extent possible and permitted by university policy and the law
• The right to be informed of and have access to resources for medical, counseling, and advisory services, both on campus and in the community
• The right to have the report responded to promptly and with sensitivity
• The right to a thorough and impartial investigation
• The right to be informed of relevant provisions of applicable policies and procedures
• The right to have an advisor of your choice to attend meetings
• The right to have university policies and procedures followed without material deviation
• The right not to be retaliated against, or any of your family or friends to be retaliated against, for filing a report or participating in an investigation
• The right not to have unrelated prior sexual history considered as evidence
• The right to have the determination made using the preponderance of the evidence standard
• The right to be notified in writing of the outcome & sanction(s) at the same time as the respondent
• The right to appeal the outcome
• The right to continued support and access to campus resources through the appeal period
