Take an active and informed role in democracy.

Participating in elections is one crucial way we contribute to our national democracy. Registering to vote, knowing what's on your ballot, and voting, joining the Voter Engagement Committee, caring for yourself and others in the midst of election-related stress, and learning more about our electoral system are all ways your involvement matters.

In Vision 2026, William & Mary is committed to "lead[ing] essential efforts to practice and promote democratic ideals in the pursuit of a more perfect union," through the university's Democracy Initiative. Civic & Community Engagement fosters the development of democratic practices, through programming that supports our civic learning and action goals. We define democratic practices as "sharing power and responsibility equitably with others, recognizing that all people have knowledge and capacities to contribute to processes affecting them and their communities."
