Engage in Your Career Readiness

Engage in Your Career Readiness

  • Explore Career Options
  • Engage in Your Career Readiness
  • Gain Career Experience
  • Embark on Your Career Path

Engage is where you shape your story. You will learn how to reflect on your experiences and articulate their value clearly and adaptively — whether in a pitch, an interview, or a team setting. This path helps you refine your communication, build confidence and take intentional steps forward.

Table of next steps for engaging in your career readiness pathway

Core Career Readiness Competency Inventory

Reflect & take inventory of your eight Core Career Competencies, adapted from National Association of Colleges and Employers. Identify the behaviors you have experienced using across all roles, including paid and unpaid, volunteer, clubs and academics.

Use your selected behaviors to represent your past experiences and to help you articulate your story with the transferrable skills you bring with you to your next opportunity.

This is for you if...

You need help with professional descriptions of former roles to focus on skills and accomplishments, rather than tasks, when building your career materials.

Resumes

Create or update a strong resume that effectively demonstrates your skills and accomplishments from past experiences, paid and unpaid, as they relate to the future reader. Your resume will represent you to readers who don’t know you and serve as a first impression. The purpose of a resume is to get you to the next stage of the application process, the interview.

Once you have a draft of your resume, you should meet with a member of the Office of Career Development & Professional Engagement team for suggestions to make it the strongest representation of you. You can either schedule a 1:1 appointment or stop by Quick Advising. Additionally, you can upload targeted versions of your resume to your profile in TribeCareers.wm.edu so it is ready to submit for opportunities.

Cover Letters

Draft a cover letter to introduce yourself, highlighting your skills and how you fit with the organization and role. It often serves as a good writing sample and a view into your editing and proofreading skills, your organizational skills and clarity of thought.

After completing your draft, you should meet with a member of the Office of Career Development & Professional Engagement team for suggestions to make it the strongest representation of you. You can either schedule a 1:1 appointment or stop by Quick Advising.

LinkedIn

Build your LinkedIn profile to create your public professional representation of your experiences; be sure to personalize your headline and summary sections, while detailing skills and accomplishments from various roles.

Once you publish your LinkedIn profile, you should connect with everyone you know, no matter what their industries, since you never know when they can provide an introduction for you. It is also a good idea to follow companies and join groups.

This is for you if...

You would like to expand your network of people working in fields related to your interests and living where you'd like to live.

From the directory, you can also filter members based on how they’re willing to help others and message them using suggestions for getting the conversation started.

Career Readiness Foundations

Sign up for this four-week, self-paced, virtual program to learn top tips on resumes, online networking, cover letters and interviewing. When you participate in Career Readiness Foundations, each module includes practice drafts to receive feedback from a member of the Office of Career Development & Professional Engagement.

Completing this program sets you up for success with knowing how to best articulate your experiences in writing, in networking and in interviews.

Submitting all four module assignments also fulfills the prerequisites needed to apply for F.U.S.E. funding.

This is for you if...

You want to work on your resume, cover letter, professional profiles and interview practice at your own pace while getting help from the Career Center, or if you anticipate applying for F.U.S.E. funding at some point. This program is offered once every semester and twice during the summer.

Internship & Applied Learning Showcase

Submit to be a presenter if you have had a recent applied learning experience and would like to share what you learned, what you accomplished, and what career readiness competencies you developed as a result of the experience.

After participating you can support other William & Mary students by sharing your experience so they can consider it as a future opportunity for themselves.

This is for you if...

You want to practice articulating your experience to different audiences.

Career Advising Appointments

Meet with a career advisor to draft and review your professional materials so they best represent you. You can ask questions and practice your resume, cover letter, online profiles, personal statements, interviews and more.

This is for you if...

You’d like to work 1:1 with an advisor in the Office of Career Development & Professional Engagement to go over your professional career readiness materials.
