Graduate Writing and Communication Center

What is the GWCC?

The GWCC is a free resource brought to you through a partnership between the A&S Graduate Center and the Writing and Communication Center. Located on the first floor of Swem Library, the GWCC welcomes grad students for individual help at any stage of writing, from generating ideas to polishing a final draft. We offer individual writing consultations as well as occasional GWCC Workshops (see below) and Write-ins on Saturday mornings. Visit the Grad Center Events Calendar for upcoming GWCC events.

Why bother?

Don't take our word for it, see what your colleagues have said!

"My name is Woosub Jung, and I’m a tenure-track assistant professor at Towson University. Looking back, engaging with GWCC was a game changer. For three years, I consistently attended two sessions per week. They are all highly qualified and very passionate about helping your growth. Without their constructive feedback, my award-winning dissertation and research papers would have never been possible. I’m confident that you will also become an independent writer/researcher with their help. Overall, I strongly recommend GWCC for your academic journey."

“I feel like my writing has more direction and structure, and is more effective in making the point I had originally intended.”

"My consultation session […] was pivotal for me to stay on track and continue working on my dissertation."

What to expect from a consultation appointment at the GWCC:

Strengthen your writing skills by working with a specially-trained graduate writing consultant on any type of graduate-level writing at any stage of the process. Bring class assignments, research proposals, job cover letters, thesis/dissertation excerpts, or teaching statements at any stage of development. You will receive guidance to help you develop your writing and editing skills, and to improve clarity, focus, and organization. The GWCC is not an editorial service. The consultant will guide you toward better skills and habits. Each appointment lasts 50 minutes.

How to prepare for an appointment:
  • Plan ahead. Bring the assignment and any other relevant materials, as well as the piece of writing you'd like help with.
  • You'll have 50-minutes. To make good use of the time, come prepared with some questions or specific issues you'd like to work on.
  • Don't be afraid to bring a very early, rough draft, or even just an outline. We can help you at any stage of the writing process!
  • Be ready to take an active role in the consultation.

"…not only incredibly helpful in generating new ideas to move me out of my writing anxiety, but also kind, affirming, and made me feel particularly seen in a difficult time for my studies."
