Placement Exams
AP/IB Exams and A-Levels

W&M accepts credit based on AP/IB exam scores and completion of A-Levels. See the W&M Course Catalog for detailed information and our credit PDF for more info on AP/ IB credits for freshman applicants and for transfer applicants.

Special Note for Spring 2020:

The College Board will administer an exam (albeit shorter and in a different modality than the norm) and will issue AP “scores;” William & Mary will accept the scores the College Board reports for 2020 and grant credit in accordance with our existing requirements.

Similarly, International Baccalaureate has announced that it will issue test score-equivalent grades on the normal IB 1-7 scale; these scores will be based on an external review of work completed rather than on an in-person examination.  William & Mary will accept the scores that IBO reports for 2020 and grant credit in accordance with our existing requirements.

We urge students to govern themselves wisely in pursuing and accepting such credit.  Students should consider carefully whether to seek the credit if they intend to continue study in the subject and are unsure of their mastery of the full AP or IB course material. Enrolling students at William & Mary will have an opportunity to consult with academic advisors as they decide whether or not to seek credit earned from an AP or IB score.
