William & Mary is committed to making a high-caliber education affordable for Virginia residents. Through the Pell Promise, eligible in-state undergraduate students who qualify for a Federal Pell Grant and demonstrate significant financial need* will receive scholarship aid covering at least the full cost of tuition and fees.
*William & Mary determines whether a student demonstrates significant financial need based on a complete financial aid application(s), as well as other financial resources and circumstances considered through the university's institutional need-analysis process.
Who is eligible?
According to Department of Education data, over 93% of Pell Grant recipients come from families earning less than $60,000 per year. Nearly half of all first-generation college students receive Pell Grants.
How do I apply?
Pell Grant eligibility is determined from the information that is reported on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To be considered for W&M institutional aid, first-year and transfer students are required to submit the CSS Profile. The maximum Pell Grant award is $7,395 for the 2025-26 award year (July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026), in addition to funding assistance provided by W&M.
