Milan Chakraborty ’00

Film Producer

Major: {{https://mason.wm.edu/undergraduate/academics/majors-concentrations/#accounting-major,Accounting}}

Milan has served as a producer or executive producer on over 35 films. His career includes working in production finance and accounting at Warner Bros. on blockbusters such as Batman Begins and V for Vendetta and transitioning to independent films such as the award-winning My Friend Dahmer and Assassination Nation. In 2021, he was named head of film for Marginal MediaWorks, a studio focused on telling stories from traditionally marginalized communities. One of his projects, the Netflix documentary Black Barbie, won two Daytime Emmy Awards in 2025, including Outstanding Arts and Popular Culture Program.

He never planned to pursue a career in the film industry. An accounting major at William & Mary, he started working as an auditor after graduating, first at Arthur Andersen, then AOL Time Warner. After attending a conference in Los Angeles and catching up with fellow W&M friends, he requested a transfer to the West Coast, where he audited film productions and became interested in producing.

Milan credits fellow W&M alumni with helping him along the way as investors, lawyers and music supervisors, among other roles. “Most importantly, they’ve been supportive in understanding the risk I was taking,” he says.

He remains connected to his alma mater as a member of the W&M Alumni Association Board of Directors and as an adjunct professor of film & media studies. He’s only missed two Homecoming & Reunion Weekends in the past 25 years and served as a reunion ambassador for his 25th reunion in 2025. He says, “I want to work so that every alum feels the love I have for this university, and I want that bond to strengthen from the day they graduate for the rest of their life.”
