Student Services at the Counseling Center

How can we help?

The W&M Counseling Center provides a range of services for currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students. See below for a summary of our services, and feel free to visit our page on how to make an appointment

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy offers confidential, one-on-one support to help you explore personal challenges, develop coping strategies, and work toward your mental health goals. At the Counseling Center, we provide brief, biweekly sessions tailored to your unique needs and treatment objectives. Our therapists foster a safe, nonjudgmental environment where you can openly share your concerns, gain insight, and build skills to improve your well-being. Whether you’re managing stress, anxiety, relationship issues, or other challenges, individual therapy delivers personalized care to support your growth and resilience. Visit our make an appointment page to learn how to get started. Additionally, W&M students have access to TimelyCare, which offers 12 free virtual therapy sessions each academic year.

Couples Counseling

Couples counseling involves both partners meeting together with a counselor to address communication issues and relationship concerns. To be eligible for this service, both individuals must be currently enrolled at W&M. Call our office during business hours at (757) 221-3620 to inquire about our couples counseling availability.

Group Therapy

Group counseling typically involves 5–8 students meeting with one or two counselors to explore shared concerns in a supportive setting. For many issues, group therapy can be one of the most effective and meaningful forms of treatment. We offer a variety of therapy groups each semester to meet students’ diverse needs and interests. Visit our group therapy page to learn more about current offerings and visit our appointment page to learn how to schedule an initial consultation to get started.

Outreach Programs

Counseling Center staff are available to design and deliver outreach programs on a wide range of topics. In addition to student-focused programming, we offer consultation services to university departments, organizations, and administrative units to support effective functioning and address student concerns. We are also available to provide therapeutic support during campus crises or times of loss. Visit our outreach programs page to learn more.

Mental Health Referrals

Our Mental Health Services Coordinator (MHSC) is here to help you find the care that best fits your individual needs. During your appointment, you’ll receive personalized guidance on counseling and psychiatric options, community resources, and next steps for mental health support. The MHSC can also assist with navigating insurance, accessing basic needs, and addressing barriers to care.

To schedule an appointment with the MHSC, please call (757) 221-3620 or click here to use our online scheduling portal.
