Placing Rows on a Page
Prepare a Page to Display Rows
While all pages are eligible for rows, you need first to optimize the main content area of a page to prepare for successful row placement. The center column of content should be the longest column on the page at all display sizes.
- Evaluate the page by viewing it on a large desktop display and dragging your browser window to a variety of widths, allowing you to approximate desktop, tablet, and phone display sizes.
- At wider laptop/desktop views: If your left or right columns are longer than the center column, make adjustments. This could include turning the right column on or off, adding or removing items in the right column, removing extra elements and buttons from the left column, or adjusting your menu structure to reduce its size.
Build or Locate a Row
You can create a new row or locate an existing one. Rows can be placed on multiple pages. Any row that you can view in the Cascade folder tree is eligible to be placed on your pages.
Tip: Using rows you don't maintain on your pages carries inherent risk — we recommend you first discuss their use with the row owner.
Place Rows on a Page
- Edit a page, scroll down and expand the Rows section.
- Use the Row Page chooser to select a row file.
- Select a theme for the row on this page.
- Select Inherit to use the default row theme set on the row file, or set a preferred theme to customize the appearance of the row. Setting a theme on the page is recommended to ensure that changes to the default theme do not affect the row on this page.
- For rows that use the Image theme: When placing the row on a page, select Inherit to display the Image theme, or set a preferred color theme for the page. You cannot customize the background image for the Image theme when placing it on a page — update the background image by editing the row file.
- Use the green + to add another row. Use the up/down arrows or drag-and-drop feature to reorder.
- Preview, submit and publish the page.
Tip: When viewing a page with rows in Cascade, click the arrow icon in the top-left corner of each row to navigate to the row file quickly.
Add a Row Anchor
You can use anchor links to bring visitors to rows further down your page. To accomplish this, first add an anchor to your row:
- Click Edit on your row in Cascade.
- Click the Metadata tab.
- In the Anchor text box, enter your anchor ID. For best results, the ID should be all lowercase and have no spaces. Hyphens are allowed. Your ID should be concise yet descriptive and unique.
- For example, if you want to link users directly to your Event Feed row, apply some context to the ID, such as chemistry-events.
- Submit and publish the row.
Updating Row Content
- To update the content of a row, edit and publish the row file.
- You do not need to publish the pages displaying the row.
- If a row is unpublished or deleted, it will no longer appear on any live pages.
Tip: If you move or rename a row file, you will need to publish any pages that display the row. Not sure which pages are using the row? Check for relationships to the row.
