Success Coaching

Success Coaching is designed to support currently enrolled students in a one-on-one setting to help them meet their goals. Trained graduate students coach students to develop the habits and skills to succeed. All coachees are paired with a coach for recurring appointments on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis.

To participate in the Success Coaching program, please contact our Success Coaching email. Coachees must wait for a pairing email from Academic Wellbeing before scheduling.

What coachees can expect:

Learn how to prioritize academic work
Learn study tips & resources for your current courses
Create a plan that establishes a healthy balance between school, personal time, work, and other commitments
Meet with your assigned coach on a recurring basis (choices of weekly, biweekly, or monthly) to continually update and rework your plan for success this semester

What Success Coaching is NOT:

Therapy or Counseling
Coaching is a supportive space focused on personal growth and goal achievement, but it’s not meant to diagnose or treat mental health conditions. If those needs arise, we can help connect you with the right mental health resources.

Academic Advising
Your coach is here to help you develop strategies for success, but we don’t create academic plans, select courses, or make financial aid decisions. For those areas, your academic advisor is the best person to guide you.

Tutoring
A success coach helps you strengthen study habits, time management, and learning strategies, but we don’t teach or tutor specific course material. For subject-specific help, the TutorZone is a great resource.

Personal Responsibility
Your coach is here to offer tools, encouragement, and accountability, but your progress comes from your own effort. Together, we’ll make sure you have the support you need to reach your goals.

Cost and Fee Waivers

Thanks to the generosity of the Parents & Family Fund, we are able to offer fee waivers to students. Once our funding is fully allocated, standard fees will apply at $25 per session. All charges will be billed to your student account at the end of each month unless you have been referred to the program by a professional staff member. If you are interested in financial assistance, please contact us at our Success Coaching email.

Scheduling

In order to be paired with a success coach, all students must be referred to the program. If you are interested in receiving success coaching services but you have not been referred, please reach out to [[successcoaching]] and an Academic Wellbeing staff member will work with you to determine if the Success Coaching program will suit your needs.

Success coaches will set up recurring appointments in our scheduling system for all sessions following the first meeting.

How to Become a Success Coach

Success Coaching is an excellent opportunity for graduate students to gain mentoring experience. Success coaches meet with students regularly in a one-on-one setting to help them develop valuable skills, like time management, organization, and self-advocacy. Success coaches are paid $17 per hour.

Qualifications

Graduate Student at William & Mary
Excellent communication skills
Must be able to meet with assigned students on campus and in person
A personal and professional commitment to academic integrity
Previous coaching, tutoring, or mentoring experience is appreciated but not required

Expectations

Success coaches will attend scheduled coaching training sessions and meetings.
Success coaches will maintain a friendly demeanor and positive attitude while coaching.
Success coaches will tailor their sessions to meet student needs.
Success coaches will reply promptly to staff communications and keep accurate payroll records.
Success coaches will adhere to the W&M Code of Honor and sign and adhere to a confidentiality agreement.
