Honoring excellence: Spring 2026 Student Affairs award recipients announced

Student Affairs recently presented three annual and semi-annual awards to outstanding professional and support staff. These awards honor Sophie Proctor, Harriet Kandell, and Rossie Coleman, for their dedication and service to our community.

W. Samuel Sadler New Professional Award: Sophie Proctor

The W. Samuel Sadler New Professional Award recognizes the exceptional contributions and future potential of a professional staff member who has been in the student affairs field for no more than 5 years. The award honors the legacy of former Vice President for Student Affairs Sam Sadler (B.A. ’64, M.Ed. ’71), who served as an inspiration and mentor to countless young professionals during his 41 years at William & Mary.

Sophie Proctor

Sophie Proctor, Assistant Director of Sports, has demonstrated outstanding leadership and vision in overseeing the organization and administration of the Sport Club program. Under her guidance, the program has grown into one of the largest and most dynamic student activity programs in the Commonwealth of Virginia, supporting 50 competitive clubs and more than 2,000 participants.

With notable resilience, Sophie manages all facets of the program, from daily operations to strategic planning, all while completing her graduate studies. She coordinates every home and away event, oversees logistics, considers risk management, and organizes travel arrangements, ensuring a seamless experience for participants.

“Sophie’s collaborative spirit and positive outlook reflect the core values of Student Affairs,” wrote Sophie’s nominator. “She builds strong rapport with students, advisors, and colleagues. She encourages student autonomy and fosters a culture where students feel supported to take on challenges and new initiatives."

Chambers-Reid Award: Harriet Kandell

The Chambers-Reid Award was created in 1994 to recognize superior performance by a member of the professional staff in Student Affairs. The award honors the service of Jay L. Chambers and Harriet E. Reid, two dedicated professionals whose combined careers at William & Mary left an indelible mark on Student Affairs and whose impact can still be felt in student life today.

Harriet Kandell

Harriet Kandell, Director of Housing & Residence Life, has skillfully navigated the complexities of implementing the Housing & Dining Comprehensive Plan to enhance the residential experience for William & Mary students. By personally addressing complex issues, she has shown empathy, ensuring students and families feel heard and supported.

Harriet responded to building delays by leading the organization of temporary housing for students, providing guidance regarding shuttle service hours, amenities at hotels, moving and storage processes, and check-in procedures. She also actively contributed to the financial process by meeting with developers, financiers, and architects, while taking the lead in designing an intricate annual budget.

“Though the challenges were significant and complex, Harriet always showed up to get the job done with grace and competence,” wrote Harriet’s nominator.

Freeman Award: Rossie Coleman

The Freeman Award was created in 1998 to celebrate outstanding performance by an administrative professional in Student Affairs. The award honors the service, dedication, and spirit of Teresa L. (“Pete”) Freeman, whose decades-long career in the Office of the Dean of Students and subsequently in the Office of Student Affairs is considered legendary. Rossie Coleman

Rossie Coleman, Facilities Coordinator, is a critical member of the Residence Life team, consistently excelling across major projects, including the transition into new buildings and the extended residence hall opening process. He approaches his work with a sense of pride, ownership, and dignity, and promotes the highest standards across the community.

Rossie earns respect and admiration through the strong relationships he builds. He collaborates closely with staff and students to improve operations. This was on display when he supported the onboarding of a new custodial contractor to enhance efficiency. As a quality control expert, he regularly visits buildings to pitch in as a helper, trainer, or problem-solver.

“Most importantly, Rossie is present and he is seen by students and campus partners,” wrote Rossie’s nominator. “He has the type of reputation that is earned by action, attitude and commitment to helping others be successful.”

Together, Sophie Proctor, Harriet Kandell, and Rossie Coleman exemplify the spirit of these awards, carrying forward a legacy of excellence, dedication, and student-centered service that strengthens our community.
