Over the summer, Liz volunteered to lead a subcommittee to explore possible actions organizations can take while waiting for a university process to be completed. Liz was able to facilitate conversations through one-on-one conversations with committee members and through meetings about the various needs of the RSO’s. Liz should be commended for her participation and leadership in our efforts to educate students on how to best navigate membership issues.

Hannah has elevated our digital presence through her incredible graphic design skills, making our social media more engaging and visually appealing. Hannah also goes above and beyond in the New Recognized Student Organization Jumpstart session, where she meets one on one with each new undergraduate RSO to help navigate the many processes that come with recognition like scheduling, event planning, and funding opportunities.

What truly sets Hannah apart, however, is her commitment to students beyond structured programs. In her free time, she actively supports first-generation students, ensuring they feel a sense of belonging at William & Mary. She is also known for her willingness to help any student who seeks her advice. Hannah’s commitment to leadership is not just about the campaigns she spearheads but her approach to work.

Danny Lee, Residence Life

Core Values: Excellence, Integrity, Respect

Since Danny’s arrival on the Residence Life team, he has learned our processes and brought new ideas and wisdom to our work. He listens to our ideas about how things can improve and thinks of ways to make those changes happen. During the past few months, Danny has been knee-deep between designing a new and more intuitive evaluation tool for our student staff and then moving directly into selection.

Danny works with the Area Directors to revamp selection to better suit their needs while simultaneously trying some new ways of doing things. He makes sure that we are working to not only design a process that is less stressful on the Professional Staff but also allows student candidates to show us who they are and have the opportunity to engage with potential supervisors.

Along the way, Danny takes feedback and provides support, guidance and is willing to shift where we can. With all that is at stake with this process, it can be stressful and draining, but Danny is always ready with a smile and willingness to get the work done. I greatly appreciate his commitment to our staff, students and us.

Rachel’s dedication to student success, her leadership, and her unwavering commitment to fostering belonging, excellence, service, and student flourishing make her an outstanding representative of the Student Affairs Division.

The Student Transition Engagement Programs Team

Core Values: Belonging, Excellence, Service

The STEP team STEPPED it up for January Orientation! Faced with frigid temps, campus delays and closings, and some staff out due to illness, the small but might team still managed to make all of our new students feel welcomed to the Tribe - and oriented to their new life at W&M. This team is committed to the student experience, and we are grateful to Lauren, LeighAnn, Kenzee and Reagan for their dedication during the Big Freeze!

Wilmarie Rodriguez, Student Success

Wilmarie has a unique ability to create a sense of belonging within our team. Through her unwavering support, she fosters an environment where everyone feels valued and included. She takes the time to listen, offer encouragement, and ensure that each team member knows they are an integral part of our shared success.

Wilmarie embodies excellence in her daily work and long-term visioning. She has encouraged us to be the “premier model” of excellence in our field, setting a standard so high that other universities look to us as an example. More importantly, she reminds us that excellence is not about perfection—it’s about consistently giving our best and continuously growing. Through her leadership, we are not only motivated to achieve excellence ourselves but also to inspire others to do the same.

Wilmarie is a visionary, thinking years ahead to ensure our team remains at the forefront of innovation and success. Her curiosity guides her own growth and development as well as steering her thematic area and staff in alignment with the mission of the division and university. Her frequent question is “why?”, not in judgement, but out of curiosity in guiding herself and others to reflect deeply on how and why things are done so that we are serving students to the best of our ability. She questions assumptions to challenge herself and staff not to be stuck in negative or static thinking, but to seek possibility and positive change. She nurtures individual and team growth. Spreading joy, especially in difficult times, is her superpower.

Arayna Scott, Student Accessibility Services

Core Value: Service

Arayna Scott, Student Accessibility Services’ administrative coordinator, is also known as our Ace in the Hole. She is always the first one in the office in the morning welcoming students. Most recently, Arayna has stepped up to support our testing center in a capacity that shows her dedication to serving SAS students. Arayna was a key player in making finals run smoothly and helped with organizing 150 exams per day. SAS is grateful for her hard work, dedication, and service to students with disabilities.

Fall 2024

Jenny Call’s exceptional kindness, unwavering care, and steadfast commitment to her students and her Student Success team consistently leaves those around her in awe. She has the confidence in her own abilities and the respect for others’ input and perspectives to recognize that most tasks are better approached with the thoughts of multiple people. Her approach to work and collaboration is truly something to which all professionals can aspire.

Rossie Coleman, Residence Life

Core Values: Excellence, Service

Since Rossie joined the Residence Life Business Operations team, he has demonstrated a high level of dedication to good service and quality follow-up. His previous experience in Facilities Management has informed his work in residence halls in a variety of positive ways. One example is the initiative he took to research a floor cleaning product and process to potentially speed up building preparation processes over the summer. Rossie took it upon himself to order the product and complete the cleaning process on a bedroom floor in order to test it for ease of use and time to completion.

Rossie is the swiss army knife of Residence Life, becoming indispensable and a significant contributor to its success.  Whether he is moving, hauling, fixing, training student and custodial staff, working directly with a student to re-arrange their room for comfort or an accommodation, rearranging bollards, ordering furniture, doing building inspections or planning for public area and room upgrades; Rossie tackles everything with a sense of pride, ownership and service that reflects well on Residence Life, the Division and the University.

Heather Deere, Family Engagement

Core Values: Excellence, Service

Heather's pursuit of excellence is exhibited in her planning of Family Orientation and Family Weekend. Throughout the school year and summer months prior, she tirelessly configures staff and faculty schedules but then also maneuvers around constraints on spaces for events and ever-changing vendor availability.  And throughout this process, she is seamlessly communicating updates and changes to students, their families, staff and the larger campus community as a whole. Always with a smile - you can hear it in her voice on the phone or the words in her responses to emails in the Families inbox. In person, she's a rockstar. She is here to do the work for the families and she delivers! With her authentic Deere style and William & Mary intention, our families and this community are extremely fortunate to have Heather Deere representing our school with her service and her excellence!

Orley Estrada, First Generation Student Engagement

Core Values: Belonging, Flourishing

As a first-gen college graduate of William & Mary's class of 2023, Orley has faced numerous obstacles yet continues to persist and thrive both academically and personally. His drive and determination are evident in his current semester, where he is conducting research while applying to PhD programs—a remarkable achievement in itself.

Orley's impact extends beyond the classroom and into the broader first-gen community. He was awarded a School of Education grant to present his work at the First Gen Summit at Southern New Hampshire University. His contributions to the inaugural AAA Tri-Alpha First Gen Honors Society Induction Ceremony—where he himself was inducted—were invaluable.  Further amplifying his commitment, Orley spearheaded William & Mary's First Gen Grad Students Fireside Chat during last week’s National First Gen Week, which helped inspire our first-gen undergraduates.

His ability to balance these responsibilities while flourishing personally is a testament to his exceptional work ethic and leadership. His contributions reflect a deep commitment to fostering inclusion, growth, and support for his peers.

Emily Gerst, Conflict Resolution & Education

Core Values: Excellence, Service

I am pleased to nominate Emily Gerst, Director of Conflict Resolution and Education, for her amazing leadership with the Better Arguments workshops. From jumping right in to help plan this summer’s faculty/staff Professional Development days, to stepping in for Dean Carrie Cooper in delivering the Better Arguments session for all new students with me, to serving as the primary organizer of the September Workshops for faculty and staff, Emily’s contributions have been invaluable. We are fortunate to have her on our team, bringing expertise in conflict resolution and real enthusiasm for work in higher education. Though she has been at W&M for only a few months, colleagues across campus already seek her out as a strong and knowledgeable partner. We are so fortunate to have Emily in Student Affairs.

James Holmes, Campus Recreation

Core Values: Excellence, Integrity, Service

For nearly two decades, James Holmes has been the backbone of the Campus Recreation department, ensuring that vehicles and facilities are safe, functional, and operating at the highest standard. James oversees the maintenance of a fleet of 17 vehicles, personally ensuring that each one is ready for student use. His attention to detail and commitment to safety have made him an indispensable part of Campus Recreation.

James is also responsible for the upkeep of all gym equipment, regularly performing preventive maintenance to ensure smooth operations. His dedication extends to outdoor spaces as well, where he personally maintains fields used by Campus Recreation and the Athletics Department. In addition to his technical expertise, James supervises a team of student employees, providing mentorship and guidance that reflect his strong leadership and respect for others.

James' exceptional dedication to Campus Recreation cannot be overstated. His commitment to excellence, integrity, and service make him a true unsung hero, and he is more than deserving of the Golden Griffin Award.

Shiyanna McLeod, Student Center for Inclusive Excellence

Core Values: Flourishing, Service

Shiyanna is the Assistant Director in the Student Center for Inclusive Excellence and has endured many transitions and challenges over the past few months while inheriting new and greater responsibilities. Over the summer, she worked to support LGBTQ+ organizations and helped with a successful production from Inside Out Theater, helping lead to the reassurance and psychological safety of all students.

Shiyanna helped to bring our most recent Taste of Latine event to life, working with our Latine student organizations to create a menu. This menu, featured in the Sadler Food Hall, provided 2200 students (and staff) an opportunity to experience popular Latin cuisine. This delightful experience created so much excitement that some students called home about it!  Shiyanna’s patience and support are unmatched as she takes time to mentor our student staff members. Her office is often open to students to explore their goals and hopes for postgraduation. In addition, she eagerly leads President’s Council meetings and serves as an advisor to CHAPS! Above all that she has done and continues to do - Shiyanna is exploring law school and has an impressive LSAT score to boast!

Mel Noble, Counseling Center

Core Values: Belonging, Excellence

Mel stepped into the Counseling Center’s Outreach Coordinator role over the summer and has already completely overhauled it. She is passionate about finding new and engaging ways to interact with students, and she works hard to reach out to various campus partners and offices with the goal of providing opportunities for all of our students to get connected with the mental health services they need.

Mel strives for excellence in everything she does and makes her colleague’s jobs easier because of how excited and organized she is in this role. Mel genuinely enjoys planning events to benefit and support our students and campus partners -- and also comes up with the best potluck themes! She is creative, welcoming, and always finds a way to make our staff laugh. Every staff needs a Mel, and we are so lucky to have her!

Tiffany Rodriguez, Care Support Services

Core Values: Belonging, Curiosity, Excellence

You probably know her for her bright smile and positive “can do” attitude. Tiffany Rodriguez lives up to her Funshine Bear nickname as she truly shines, bringing light wherever she goes. Tiffany demonstrates all of our W&M values, but particularly exemplifies belonging, curiosity, and excellence.

A kind, caring, and welcoming presence for all students and staff, she meets people where they are, and guides them through challenges with compassion and patience. Whether it is a faculty consulting on a student issue, training staff on how to respond to care concerns, supporting her team, or being an expert in the systems we use, she is dedicated to helping others. Students who meet with Tiffany continue to meet with her, sometimes weekly, which demonstrates how she nurtures belonging.

When Care Support Services hired her following her GA position in CVRP (now SARP), we knew that her relational ability and understanding of our context would be a benefit. But we have also been amazed by her creativity and tremendous productivity. She came into her first full-time position with big ideas and has accomplished them over the past year, creating a “Zen Zone” relaxation room and starting a small group for our students on case management to build social and coping skills. She quickly became an integral part of our team, contributing ideas and making our work more efficient through her curiosity in seeking new solutions and better utilization of our resources.

Tiffany demonstrates excellence by working with passion and care. Her thoughtfulness and cheer daily lift her team’s spirit.  She is a growing professional in her work while remaining open to learning. It is for this reason that she has decided to pursue her counseling license through a new position with Christopher Newport University next semester. Unfortunately, that means that we will say goodbye to her on December 13th. It is bittersweet as we will miss our Funshine, but celebrate her growth and next steps with gratitude for the ways she has made a difference at W&M.

Rob Thompson, Campus Recreation

Core Values: Integrity, Service

From the moment he joined the Campus Recreation staff, Rob has consistently gone above and beyond to enhance the operations of the department's many workings. One of Rob’s most striking qualities is his keen attention to detail. He has meticulously overseen the planning and execution of Sports Club events and administrative tasks, ensuring that every aspect is thoughtfully considered.

Furthermore, Rob exemplifies dedication through his willingness to step up when challenges arise. Whether it’s helping others in the office or working late to ensure everything runs smoothly, he always keeps the department's success at the forefront. Rob's reliability and work ethic inspire those around him and fosters a strong sense of teamwork within Campus Recreation.

In addition to Rob's professional contributions, he actively engages with students by building meaningful relationships and encouraging their growth. This personal touch makes a significant impact, creating a sense of belonging that resonates throughout the Campus Recreation student staff. Rob’s service, dedication, and attention to detail make him a truly deserving candidate for the Golden Griffin.

Spring 2023

Anne Arseneau, Student Leadership Development

Core Values: Excellence, Service

Anne’s work in developing the University response to the Virginia legislation known as Adam's Law has been and continues to be remarkable. The legislation requires University Staff to train in-person, potential new organization members, current organization members, and advisors of student organizations about hazing, the dangers of hazing, including alcohol intoxication, and hazing laws and institution policies.

At the outset, Anne organized online gatherings of staff from Virginia public universities to discuss the requirements of the new law. She convened a William & Mary committee and collectively decided on the William & Mary approach. She provided leadership for training staff, and thus far we have conducted in-person sessions for more than 1500 students. This is arguably some of the most important work we can do as a caring community. Anne truly exemplifies excellence and service to our students, and we are most grateful to her for her efforts.

Cenie Bellamy, Academic Wellbeing

Core Values: Belonging, Service, Excellence

Dean Bellamy is the heart of the Student Success Thematic Area. She is humble; positive; and always willing to go the extra mile to ensure our students, families, and staff feel loved, accepted, and heard. She is the person our students seek on a daily basis for comfort, support, advice, and hugs. Yes, you heard that right: hugs. I have seen firsthand students walking into our suite asking for Dean Bellamy and her hugs because they make our campus feel more like a home.

I like to think our students can feel the love Dean Bellamy has for them, for her work, and for William & Mary in those hugs. Dean Bellamy’s genuine care and concern is what makes those hugs so special. She is the type of professional who always takes time to celebrate successes and grieve losses with her students. She takes time to get to know her students in a way that redefines her position from service provider to mentor and ally. Dean Bellamy is invested in and committed to our students’ development and success, and our students benefit immensely from her care and compassion.

Dean Bellamy reinforces everyday all the values of the Division of Student Affairs, especially belonging. She also exemplifies what it is to be a valued member of the Tribe. Dean Bellamy, we see you!

Rebecca Dougherty, Military & Veterans Affairs

Core Values: Belonging, Excellence, Flourishing, Service

Rebecca has represented the interests of military and veteran students and their families in front of groups of veteran students and educators, mental health professionals, the Student Engagement and Leadership Advisory Board, and even William & Mary Chancellor Robert M. Gates. She has helped military and veteran students feel that they belong and flourish by building individual relationships and advising groups like the Student Veterans of W&M and the Military and Veteran Family Counseling students.

She is well respected by both peers and supervisors; her peers elected her president of the Counseling Student Honor Society, and her supervisors selected her to present her research at a conference and serve on a panel for military and veteran students. She has done all this in her graduate assistant capacity, while at the same time serving one of the most vulnerable populations in Hampton Roads at Eastern State Hospital. These dual 20 hour-per-week commitments do not include her class time or study time, nor the needs of her own family. Despite these demands, Becca has consistently performed at an outstanding level and improved the operations and effectiveness of William & Mary’s Military & Veteran Affairs.

Fall 2022

Joy Badalis, Counseling Center

Core Value: Belonging

Just like her namesake, Joy brings "Joy" wherever she goes. Working in the counseling center can be rewarding and challenging. As new trainees and students arrived Joy reminds us all that life should be full of "JOY!” With a well stocked candy jar, and a well thought out "counseling center duck hunt," Joy brings a sense of togetherness after years of pandemic and social isolation.

She is welcoming to her colleagues and the students who walk through her door. An experience with Joy is one full of love, acceptance, and knowing that she will always remind you that you belong right where you are.

Hayden Cochran, Trici Rudalf & Jenna Venable, Student Unions & Engagement

Core Value: Service

These three tirelessly brought the vision of the Sadler Block Party (Zip Slice Explore) to life. Having been tasked with bringing this event to life in just one month, Trici formed the planning committee which focused on gathering others' thoughts and ideas, making sure to incorporate something for everything- students and staff alike. Trici, Jenna, & Hayden were a dream team who did the heavy lifting to make the event such a huge success for all of Student Affairs!

The students loved it, and it was such a huge success that we want to do it again next year. Thanks to the entire planning committee for all of your contributions, and to Hayden, Trici, and Jenna for leading the way!

Michael Embry, Residence Life

Core Values: Belonging, Excellence

This summer, Michael established the inaugural Pride committee and invited everyone to celebrate in Pride month to celebrate LGBTQ+ identities and history. The Campus Living Center Pride Celebration included an office parade where everyone could participate or cheer from their offices. Michael and the committee decorated the front entryway and conference room and participants decorated their chairs and office doors. The day of the celebration include a full day of programming including: Pride Trivia, Dessert Party, and 2 lecture series (LGBT & the high seas: Gender & Sexuality in the Golden Age of Piracy; and Queer Coding Villains- A discussion of hidden Queer references in Disney movies). While it was a celebratory time for professional staff, when student staff came for a meeting - it meant so much to them to see their identities represented in our office and feel a sense of belonging.

Taylor Locks, Eric Margiotta, Student Unions & Engagement

Core Value: Service

Eric and Taylor were exceptional in opening the Sadler expansion and should be recognized both for their teamwork and for their individual skills and talents. The undertaking was massive with behind-the-scenes challenges during the weeks and days leading to opening. The duo (and the rest of the SUE team) handled the unexpected hurdles with poise and grace.

Taylor's talents include, but are not exhaustive of, a remarkable presentation and speaking skillset, and fantastic communication of policies and procedures. Among many things, Taylor kept us all updated on changes, shepherded the student organization storage moves, and modeled a wonderful way to be welcoming and inclusive.

Eric's dedication to creating a Union where all are welcome, where students visit to "see and be seen," where an atrium is full of life and where staff can do their best work, is now a vision come to fruition. The entire SUE staff deserves accolades and I know Eric and Taylor will share their stuffed prizes with the team. Today, for their exemplary work, we are pleased to recognize Taylor and Eric!

Wilmarie Rodriguez, Dean of Students

Core Values: Belonging, Excellence, Flourishing, Integrity

Wilmarie is an exceptional colleague and leader. She goes above each and every day to make sure her staff and students have everything they need to feel heard, seen, and thrive.

Over the past several months, Wilmarie's workload has increased. She has taken over formal supervision of the Center for Student Diversity, took the helm of the newly reorganized office of Academic Wellbeing, and was promoted to Senior Associate Dean. During this time, she researched other Academic Wellbeing offices (finding only one other), looked at best practices, re-envisioned workflows, and came up with an amazing new logo and branding.

Students are flowing seamlessly into both departments, getting what they need and coming back because they want to. She goes above and beyond every day. On the Leadership team, she offers clear and consistent advice, collaboration and counsel. We are thankful to have Wilmarie on our team!

Spring 2022

Emily LeForce, Campus Recreation

Core Values: Belonging, Excellence

Emily is the graduate Assistant for the Tribe Adventure Program (TAP for short). She routinely goes above and beyond to make sure the trips run smoothly as well as act as a role model for her student employees. She has sacrificed so much of her time for the program - from facilitating canoe training during her time off to returning to campus in January to camp out in the freezing cold in order to train for outdoor winter activities. She is a bright spot in the office who will be quick to let you know when ABBA has released a new song. At the same time, she takes her work - both assistantship and otherwise - incredibly seriously, devoting ample time to make sure everything is completed well before the deadline. She hits curveballs out of the park and never shies away from a challenge. She is very deserving of the Golden Griffin Award!

CURIOSITY: Tracy does not settle with an "I don't know." She will research and find a solution to any problem.

EXCELLENCE: Tracy excels in everything that she does. She provides excellent customer service and support to the DOSO staff, students, parents/caregivers, and manages all of the CAS and MRC petitions.

RESPECT: Tracy is a team player and demonstrates empathy, compassion, care, and concern for everyone.

SERVICE: Tracy offers help to any and every one, wherever there is a need. Despite all the responsibilities that she has on her plate as the Professional Administrator for two departments, she is still willing to lend a hand.

Shylan Scott, Residence Life

Core Value: Service

Since June 2021, Shylan has quietly taken on responsibilities for an increasing number of vacant positions in Residence Life. She managed the selection process for Residence Life student staff in addition to her own responsibilities, and has taken on oversight of several residence halls due to vacant Area Director positions. Shylan has never once complained, and remains focused on doing great work, and making the student experience the best it can be. She's been fantastic, and we want everyone to know!

Fall 2021

Chris Ladnier, Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs

Core Values: Collaboration, Excellence

Chris' knowledge of the university and generous, giving spirit really shined over the past 17 months of the pandemic. Not only did Chris manage the affairs of the Vice President's Office remotely, but she also volunteered to answer all calls that came in to W&M's central switchboard for the past year and a half! Additionally, when the Cohen Career Center was down a critical staff member, Chris willingly stepped in to serve as their primary fiscal manager until the position could be filled. No sooner did that special assignment end, then Chris was asked to step in and provide administrative support to the Dean of Students Office. For months, Chris learned the Dean of Students Office systems and processes and added her skill and effort during a time when that help was desperately needed. Chris has always been a steady presence in the VP's office, but this past year she helped the whole university and the division stay afloat during a time of tumult and great need. We are very lucky to have her as a colleague!

Jocelyn has also been a key player in the buy W&M system, in which she has taken extra time to learn and work with others to ensure they are meeting all the expectations of the new buying system. Jocelyn has done this while still maintaining a strong office culture, removing outdated personnel files, and ensuring that things are organized for the entire office, not just her department. Jocelyn has been a key reason why the Dean of Students office has been running effectively.

Spring 2021

Nick Hollomon, Student Unions & Engagement

Core Value: Collaboration

Nick has been instrumental in getting Fitwell classes up and running at the Briggs Amphitheatre this semester. Nick loaned us an AP cart to use for classes at the amphitheatre, he cleared out the green room so that we could store 11 stationary bikes for outdoor cycling classes, and he brought his own personal wireless router down to the Amphitheatre when we were having Internet issues. Nick also had the idea for a night time Blacklight Cycling class. When we held the class on a Saturday night, Nick was there making sure the lights and AV were working well.

James Holmes, Campus Recreation

Core Values: Excellence, Student-Centeredness

James has demonstrated outstanding skill and dedication in the reopening of the Bee McLeod Recreation Center. Before the building reopened this semester, James was instrumental in reconfiguring the equipment throughout the facility to ensure Virginia Health Department compliance. Since we have opened, James has continued to improve our processes and he has made important changes to our operations that make cleaning easier and more efficient. Furthermore, he has worked long hours to ensure the Rec. Center is stocked with necessary equipment, supplies, and materials needed to be a safe space for the W&M community.

Renard Miles, Career Development

Core Values: Collaboration

Renard piloted a new asynchronous interview system for the Residence Life hiring process. The system was designed to respond to the need to conduct interviews during the pandemic. Furthermore, the asynchronous virtual interview experiences aligned Residence Life's hiring practices with emerging best practices. Although Renard did not have a current system in place, he responded enthusiastically about thinking creatively and exploring possibilities. Using the BingInterview system for mock interviews, Renard designed and implemented the new interview system for student staff selection - providing updates to the Residence Life team and supporting applicants through the process.

Sydney Scott, Student Unions & Engagement

Core Value: Excellence, Student-Centeredness

With COVID-19, Sydney had to navigate how to best work with the student group AMP on how to provide safe but engaging events for the William & Mary community. Sydney worked tirelessly with the students she advised and made sure they were being taken care of as well as worked to help put on community-wide events. She also encouraged the AMP team to look at supporting the general members to show that leadership is more than just one's title. As a result, she was able to incorporate SLD's No Title Needed initiative in with her organization's work.

Spring 2020

Greg Brown, Residence Life

Core Value: Excellence

During a catastrophic flood in Jefferson Hall that included exploding toilets and jets of water, Greg maintained a cool and collected demeanor while helping coordinate facilities management, students, and temporary assignments. His attention to detail, judgement, and caring for his residents throughout the incident and in the week of recovery that followed has been exemplary.

Even though the entire situation has been frustrating for all involved, he has been positive and always goes out of his way to mention and thank the efforts of other staff and departments. His professionalism reflects the best of our department when dealing with adversity and water... so much water.

Alexis Michalos, Academic Enrichment

Core Value: Excellence

In her role as a graduate assistant in academic enrichment, Alexis has proven herself through outstanding efforts in the development of a Peer Academic Coaching program from its pilot phase to implementation. This peer support program for some of our most at-risk students is one in which they are coached to achieve academic success, social integration, and the development of self-advocacy. Alexis has served as an advocate, coach, cheerleader, and a trainer for other coaches in this program.

Alexis has a regular following of students who look to her for her kind and caring way of teaching strategic learning material and time management techniques. Moreover, she volunteers her time to help other areas in Student Affairs including the Center for Student Diversity and Student Accessibility Services. The time and patience she takes to break things down to make things manageable for students gives them a sense of relief that things will get better. Indeed, Alexis is truly a model of professional excellence.

Jenny Dunfee, Campus Recreation; Lindsay Heck, Health & Wellness; Colin Cross, Care Support Services

Core Value: Excellence

When William & Mary began the shift to remote learning, Jenny, Lindsay, and Colin immediately began working on creative ways to provide activities and programs to the William & Mary community. Within the span of 48 hours, they collaborated with University Web & Design and our fitness and wellness instructors to launch our Virtual Health & Wellness website. The first class had 160 participants! Jenny, Lindsay, and Colin continue to collaborate with colleagues across campus to provide live and recorded programs for our community. Campus Recreation departments across the country recognize it as one of the best resources available, and it serves as a model for other universities to emulate. We are so grateful to have these outstanding professionals working for the good of the W&M community.

Dr. Patricia Roy, Counseling Center

Core Value: Excellence

Dr. Roy is a quiet force in the counseling center. Seeing students with the most significant mental health concerns, her professionalism during these last several weeks set a standard of care and excellence in the counseling center. During the time of transition, she continued to talk to up to 30 students per week. She thoughtfully developed appropriate medication plans for each student who returned home and worked to coordinate care with providers both in and out of state. Every student that has worked with Dr. Roy this semester smoothly transitioned the last several weeks without a misstep in their care. She goes above and beyond with each student in a way that makes them feel heard and validated in their treatment. She has demonstrated the values of student affairs and the counseling center and her students are always thankful for her expertise and compassion.

Drew Stelljes, Student Engagement & Leadership

Core Value: Collaboration

While Drew consistently went above & beyond in making connections and emboldening our division before the pandemic altered our routines, he has meaningfully continued to do so since the beginning of remote work. Drew has provided ample professional development opportunities and spaces for  virtual interaction and community building. He actively connects with students and colleagues alike through check-ins and the weekly "Voices" discussion series. He has set up connections for staff Across Student Affairs with members of the Student Engagement and Leadership Advisory Board along with former Vice President Sam Sadler. Drew truly exemplifies the spirit of collaboration by generously sharing time, expertise, and resources.

Felicia Brown-Anderson, Counseling Center

Core Values: Student-Centeredness, Collaboration

Felicia has been remarkable in her support for students as W&M moved to online learning after spring break. She dedicated an incredible amount of energy to develop what has been a highly utilized resource section of the Counseling Center website focused on supporting our students in their adjustment to online learning. She also inspired staff to offer outreach groups and workshops based on students' needs, and invested hours toward creating the necessary system for students to learn about and register for the workshops. She attended to all the ethical, clinical, and logistical needs to develop this system integrating different ideas, feedback, and preferences from the staff. She has been instrumental in publicizing all the new programs the center is offering and in connecting the different offices and departments that could refer students to these resources. Felicia is most deserving of this recognition!

Emily Estrada, Charles Freligh & April Martin, Counseling Center

Core Values: Student-Centeredness, Excellence

I would like to nominate this year's Counseling Center Interns Emily Estrada, Charles Freligh, and April Martin for their demonstration of Student Centeredness and Professional Excellence. This year's Interns have provided over 1,300 hours of direct service to W&M Counseling Center students. In the transition to working from home, the Interns have continued to provide excellent care to their individual clients, developed new skills to begin providing teletherapy, and have taken the lead in creating several original outreach presentations, webinars, and new virtual resources to assist students coping with the pandemic. They have done all this with positive attitudes and an eagerness to help whenever possible. For all of these reasons, and many more, we would like to recognize this year's Counseling Center Interns for their demonstration of the Student Affairs values of Student Centeredness and Professional Excellence.

Fall 2019

Taylor Eljaua - Cohen Career Center

Core Value: Excellence

Taylor joined the staff of the Cohen Career Center about one year ago and jumped right into her role to ensure employer relations at Cohen stayed on a positive trajectory. Taylor communicates with employers, recruiters, students, and staff with professionalism, grace, and overall kindness. She took on a very big role: coordinating over four major career fairs, thousands of student interviews, hundreds of employer relationships, and managing two student teams. Taylor does all things with excitement, positivity, and thoughtfulness. With so much to manage, it is a wonder how she keeps it all straight, but she does it with ease. She also adds to the culture of the office by serving on the CRW fun committee and is always thinking of ways to bring the team together in a fun way. Taylor's energy, positive attitude, and collaborative nature make her a wonderful part of the Cohen Career Center Team. Both the team and the employers she works with are lucky to have her.

Michael White, Campus Recreation

Core Value: Excellence

As the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation for Outdoor Recreation, Michael wears several hats and does the jobs of at least three people. Michael’s busiest time of year is preparing for and running Pathways, an outdoor pre-orientation experience for incoming students during which Michael runs two week-long programs for over 100 students. In addition to learning about life at W&M and forging friendships with fellow incoming students, Pathways participants report learning about how to be more flexible, how to push themselves harder, and how to be in the moment. Michael’s leadership of the Pathways program and the entire Tribe Adventure Program is impressive, and equally impressive is the way Michael manages the stress of his job and life in general. Michael is enjoyable to work with and is excited to collaborate with teammates, both in and outside of Campus Recreation. Thank you, Michael, for being an impressive professional and a great colleague!

Ali Pappas, Counseling Center

Core Value: Student-Centerdness

Dr. Pappas has been the epitome of professionalism with her consistency, preparedness, kindness, flexibility, support of her trainees and fellow staff, and the harmony among personal life and professional identities. We have witnessed her present the same kindness and warmness to individuals within and outside our counseling center and in the community. She has demonstrated flexibility with grace and has been attuned to the varied needs of the student she oversees. She is incredibly supportive of us, always improves our mood whenever we’re around her, and generally embodies a kind, compassionate, and playful energy. Ali gives the trainees the space we need to talk about frustrations and hardships (whether related to the training or to life generally) and takes every opportunity to genuinely compliment us and highlight the positive emotions related to this meaningful work.

Max Blalock, CAMU

On Tuesday, October 7th the university was surprised with an evangelical preacher at the Sundial who was preaching a message of fear and hate. Max showed up to support students and there was an audible cheer when he arrived. He was there for students on very short notice. And he displayed caring and support through his actions that demonstrated a great deal to the students who were there and helped to diffuse a complicated and highly charged situation.

On Wednesday, October 8th, Max assisted a student in need with finding temporary housing. In all things, Max displays genuine compassion for others. He can also quickly lift spirits through a good story and deep (and loud) belly laugh.

As staff and students, we are fortunate to have a caring colleague and student supporter in our midst!

Christine Ferguson, Counseling Center

Core Value: Collaboration

Christine is deeply committed to making sure connections between the university and community providers are as seamless as possible for student and families in crisis. She works diligently to create relationships with local providers and mental health facilities, streamlining procedures that allow for continuity of treatment. Her daily tasks include helping with coordinating services both on and off campus, navigating insurance coverage, transportation, and style of therapy. Being able to find the “right fit” between students and providers can be an arduous task, and Christine handles it with relative ease. She is the knowledgeable and gracious face of case management -- a direct connection to the community that expands William & Mary’s ability to service the mental health needs of our students. Because of these efforts, Christine has earned the respect and gratitude of students, their families, the community providers, and her peers.

Lindsay Heck, McLeod Tyler Wellness Center

Core Value: Collaboration

Lindsay keeps the Wellness Center and Health & Wellness on track by navigating challenges and building relationships with ease. We transitioned to a new sign up system for Wellness courses this summer and her tireless work across departments ensured everyone was on board in time for the fall semester. She always has a million tasks to complete but stops to connect with students who visit the wellness center. Her training for the Wellness Ambassadors has them functioning better than ever. As a colleague, I know I can ask her about any Health & Wellness department and she has the answer or can connect me with the right person immediately. I cannot wait to see all that Health & Wellness and the Wellness Center accomplishes this year thanks to Lindsay’s collaborative and kind spirit.

Spring 2019

Maureen Bounds (Pharmacist) and Dr. David Dafashy (Director), Student Health Center

Core Value: Collaboration

Dr. David Dafashy and Dr. Maureen Bounds have exemplified the Student Affairs value of “collaboration” by partnering with The Haven to reduce barriers for survivors accessing emergency health services. The Haven's Advisory Board brought up a concern about the barriers students face when trying to access over the counter emergency contraception. Naturally, the cost of medication and disclosing an assault to a health care provider can stand in the way of timely access to preventative treatment. When this concern was brought to Dr. Dafashy’s attention he was open and interested in hearing ideas that would eliminate these barriers. He immediately brought in Dr. Bounds to help navigate a solution to reduce these barriers. Dr. Dafashy and Dr. Bounds worked with The Haven to implement a new system where survivors could access free emergency contraception directly by visiting the pharmacy and providing a coupon indicating the need for this preventative treatment. In addition, they have worked with The Haven to make this preventative treatment available for free on the weekends when the Student Health Center is closed. Both Dr. Dafashy and Dr. Bounds have been incredibly responsive and thoughtful in their work with The Haven Advisory Board illustrating true collaboration. Their effort has also increased trust and respect between students and administrators. Most importantly, survivors at their most vulnerable time can make timely choices about their own health care and connect to services that foster healing. We are thankful to have these two individuals as our partners in supporting survivors on campus.

Raina Hafftka & Celeste Kelly Tessa Palmer, Counseling Center

Core Value: Excellence

Thus far this year, Raina, Tessa, and Celeste have met with a combined 373 unique clients and provided 1279 hours of direct service. In a year marked by transition to the new Integrative Wellness Center and increased demand for services, the Interns have supported the Counseling Center in addressing the complex mental health needs of students. Moreover, they maintain positive attitudes and are willing to bring their authentic selves into the workplace every day, which builds a sense of connectedness among our staff. We are thankful for the many contributions they have provided to our students and staff this year, and would like to take this time to honor their accomplishments in Professional Excellence.

Samantha Nussbaum, Cohen Career Center

Core Value: Excellence

Sam is always the first to arrive and the last to leave. She is an immensely hard worker and strives to best serve her students every day. Whenever an opportunity arises, whether it be facilitating a workshop or managing the “Dress to Impress” closet at Cohen, Sam is always energized and motivated to take on that new task. Simply put, Sam is a formidable force in the Cohen Career Center and everyone who works with her takes notice of her commitment, dependability, and insight.

Lindsey Mosvick, Office of Health Promotion

Core Value: Student-Centeredness

Lindsey wasted no time last semester with the coordination and implementation of the Healthy Relationships Essential First Year Initiative. She quickly revamped the Blackboard assignment for Health Promotion to give new students a comprehensive assignment that was engaging to a variety of learning styles. She has been diligent about keeping up with the grading of assignments and providing personalized feedback to students who are completing the Healthy Relationships assignment. Student Affairs is fortunate to have her as one of our newest colleagues, and the students are lucky to have her as a wonderful educator and mentor.

Bob Gough, Campus Recreation

Core Value: Excellence

Bob is constantly showing Professional Excellence, but a few examples lately show his willingness to go above and beyond. When I had to be out after surgery, Bob took on many additional responsibilities, and he did them beautifully. He is the first person to say "what can I do to help you?" when we have a staff member leave or out for an extended period of time. He already has a full plate, yet he is always offering to help in any way he can. In our staff meetings, we have been adding shout-outs to those that are going above and beyond to assist other staff. Everyone on the Campus Recreation team is mentioning specific things Bob has done to help them. These are only a few of the examples for why I believe Bob should be honored with a Golden Griffin - not only for Professional Excellence, but also Collaboration.
