Transition Coaching

Helping you get your ducks in a row

Transition Coaching is provided to all undergraduate students in their first (or Finding) year and the middle (or Forming) years of their university experience.

Every first- and second-year William & Mary undergraduate student is assigned a Transition Coach - a paid, Peer-Educator certified upper-level undergraduate student leader - who provides an additional layer of support through social and community networking, engagement opportunities, and peer initiatives. These are students who typically enjoy:

  • Serving as mentors
  • Supporting students navigating the university landscape
  • Being creative
  • Working on a collaborative and mission-driven team

Major: International Relations & Public Health I believe that the first year at college is a transformative yet also scary new chapter in everyone’s life. I remember the positive impact that upperclassmen and student leaders at William & Mary had on my freshman year and as a rising senior who was once a nervous freshman, I hope to continue the same positive impact and support for incoming students.

Major: Economics & Public Policy As someone who took months to fully adjust and find my place within the William & Mary community, I’m familiar with the struggles that can come with navigating a completely new environment. One of the biggest comforts to me during my transition period was knowing that there was always at least one person there to support me.

Major: Psychology As a first-generation college student, when I got to campus I felt like I had no one to lean on for help navigating this new college life...I don't want anyone else to make the mistake I did as a new student here of not reaching out for help.

Major: Coastal and Marine Sciences My mentorship philosophy is to lead by example, as it promotes a mentality of following through on ideas and promises.

Major: Computer Science I had a rough transition and really struggled to find my place on campus. Being able to ensure others are able to find a supportive network on campus would be super fulfilling and I am still looking to grow my own network.

Coach Mentor Major: Geology Having been a Transition Coach this past year, I am constantly reminded why I applied in the first place: being a resource, mentor, and friend for all new students during such a transitional period of their lives

Major: Data Science I’m extremely interested in applying my empathy and communication skills in a setting that helps our undergraduate population have a much smoother transition than I did, and knowing that I helped make just one student feel at home here would mean so much to me.

Major: Human Health & Physiology As an out-of-state student, I came into my freshman year of college knowing only my roommate. I worried about the connections I would make and how I would acquire the resources for my success here. The people at William and Mary made these fears dissolve.

Major: Sociology To me, mentorship is about building a trusting relationship where students feel comfortable asking questions and sharing their concerns...Coaches should help students feel confident and capable as they take their first steps at William & Mary.

Major: Undeclared I studied abroad for my first semester, and I understand that the transition of coming to college, whether coming to campus halfway through the year or in the fall, can feel difficult and uncomfortable, but I would like to be one of the people that helps to make that transition period feel a bit less daunting.

Major: International Relations It matters who you meet during your first few days of coming on-campus, it matters who you surround yourself with, it matters whether your first feeling is isolation or belonging.

"Forming" Coaches

Major: Biology I want to support incoming students in a way that I personally needed during my first semester. I’m aware that adjusting to college can be quite overwhelming, and while every student’s experience is different, having someone there for guidance can truly make a meaningful difference.

Major: Economics Transition coaching is an experience that allows coaches to interact with students on a deeper level, offering mentorship and resources as much as needed...Being able to connect with students, understand their struggles, and share advice that would have been helpful to me in their position feels extremely meaningful.

Major: Government & Sociology I remember some Transition Thursdays where I witnessed students making friends, exchanging contact info, and bonding over the provided activities...While our mentorship opportunities are incredibly important, I also think it is vital to consider how we can help students form relationships amongst themselves through our work and encourage the growth of new connections.
