FERPA for Faculty & Staff

FERPA stand for the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 and outlines rules and guidelines for schools to release information on students. Under FERPA, educational records are defined as records directly related to a student as maintained by an education agency or institution, or by a party acting for the agency or institution. The records can exist in any medium.  Read more about FERPA at W&M.

Access to a student's educational records by W&M faculty and staff is restricted by FERPA, and access will be granted only with demonstrated legitimate educational interest. Good practice by faculty and staff members requires that they maintain, use, and report student data in compliance with the requirements of FERPA.
