Assessment & Planning

Because we care.

The division of student affairs understand the value of meaningful assessment to the work we do.  We engage in ongoing, systematic efforts to evaluate the effectiveness of our programs and services, and we use that information to make improvements that will help us achieve our goals. We do it because we care about our students and the quality of their W&M experience.

Our Vision for Student Affairs Assessment

(drafted December 2025)

Assessment happens at all levels and in all areas of the division.  It's just part of what we do.

  • Staff members are able to employ a variety of assessment techniques with confidence.
  • Assessment is integrated into what we do and is not an add-on to our work.
  • Principles of assessment are part of the conversations we have with students as they plan their own programs and events.

Data informs our decisions.

  • Our programs--both new and old--are guided by clear, well-articulated learning and operational outcomes.
  • Assessments are conducted and used with intentionality. They investigate areas and ways we can improve our services and programs to meet the evolving needs of those we serve.
  • Our departments have access to results from major assessments.
  • Short-and long-term plans and budget decisions are firmly grounded in assessment data. Our investment of resources is clearly justified by the value of what we learn and do with our information.

Assessment promotes collaboration.

  • Departments and staff seek out existing data and know where to find them (or whom to ask).
  • Departments readily share assessment data and findings with each other to support and inform each other's work.
  • Student affairs data contribute to the assessment of university-wide goals and are shared, as appropriate, for the benefit of other campus offices.

Assessment helps us tell our story.

  • Department- and division-level assessment information reveals the depth and breadth of impact our work has on the student experience.
