COLL 150 ASSESSMENT SPRING 2023 

• IAE asked all faculty members teaching a COLL 150 course in spring 2023 to submit one course portfolio for each course. 

• 60 sections, 52 courses, 52 instructors, 52 portfolios requested, 41 portfolios submitted (79%). 

• Portfolio status: 41 rated (79%), 0 incomplete (0%), 11 not submitted (21%). 

STUDENT LEARNING EXPECTATIONS 

1. Critical Thinking – Students thoroughly analyze and interpret course topics. 
2. Independent Inquiry – Students work independently to understand texts and form judgments. 
3. Scholarly Writing – Students communicate effectively on course topics. 

WORKING GROUP REVIEW/FINDINGS 

• Overall, portfolios demonstrated strong performance, especially in course content and Critical Thinking. 

• Revision Skills and Scholarly Writing showed the greatest room for improvement. Seventeen percent of portfolios addressed Scholarly Writing only minimally or not at all. 

• 88% of portfolios addressed all required course features, although variability existed across instructors and departments. 

• The Working Group noted that scholarly writing is central to COLL 150 and should receive additional emphasis. 

WORKING GROUP RECOMMENDATIONS 

• Expectation 1 – We have no specific recommendations.  

• Expectation 2 – We recommend clarifying the definition of Independent Inquiry by specifying whether students are expected only to interpret instructor-provided texts independently or also to demonstrate independence by locating and evaluating their own sources. 

• Expectation 3 – We have no specific recommendations.  

• EPC Recommendations – We recommend revising the Course Portfolio Narrative Template to include a specific prompt asking faculty how their course meets the required 24-page/6,000-word writing minimum. We also recommend consolidating all COLL 150 guidance, including the Discussion and Elaboration pages, into a single EPC webpage. Additionally, the EPC should consider whether information literacy and library research skills should be incorporated into the official learning expectations to better align with existing COLL 150 guidance. 

• CLA Recommendations – We recommend continuing to offer and incentivize participation in COLL 150 course development workshops. We also recommend that the CLA provide exemplary syllabi and assignments as models for faculty and continue supporting instructors in aligning course materials with the COLL 150 learning expectations.
