Chapter Overview & History
Phi Mu holds a unique place in Greek history. Founded in 1852 at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia, Phi Mu is the second oldest female fraternal organization in the nation. It was originally established as the Philomathean Society, a literary group, by three visionary women: Mary Myrick Daniel, Martha Hardaway Redding, and Mary Dupont Lines. Gamma Alpha carries this 170 year legacy forward by blending rich traditions with new experiences.
Since 1926, the Gamma Alpha Chapter has been a community of driven, supportive women committed to sisterhood, leadership, and service on William & Mary's campus. Our chapter is proud to provide personal and academic development, philanthropy, commitment to excellence and lifelong friendships. Phi Mu promotes vibrant living, encouraging members to achieve their personal best and live every day under the values — love, honor and truth.
Whether we are meeting for a group study session in Swem, hosting a cozy move night at our chapter house, or cheering each other on at a performance, we provide a constant support system that empowers our members to be their best selves while making the most of the W&M experience.

Member Testimonials
“Phi Mu quickly became my home at William & Mary after joining in the fall of my sophomore year. From running into my sisters' arms on Bid Day to late-night Chick-fil-A runs, I knew I belonged. I even became Sisterhood Chair to help create those same moments for others. Being in Phi Mu means always having someone in your corner, and I can’t imagine my college experience without it." - Sanya Vukota
"Joining Phi Mu has been one of the greatest decisions I've made in my college life so far! As someone who was hesitant to join Greek life, it has turned out to be one of the most fruitful and rewarding experiences. I have nothing but love for my big and amazing family line and who have been one of the biggest sources of support for me! Being in a supportive sisterhood like this has definitely lifted me up during bad times and i am so lucky to call these beautiful and intelligent women my sisters!" - Clara Paez
“Phi Mu has quickly become one of the greatest loves of my life. When I started college, I never saw myself joining a sorority, but now, I’m flying to Georgia for a conference for one! I am so proud to be a Phi Mu and am so grateful for all of the opportunities it’s given me. I’ve gained friends for life, leadership skills, and a deep appreciation for an incredible sisterhood.” - Faith Jacob
