About Fraternity & Sorority Life

Fraternity & Sorority Life at William & Mary is a vibrant and values-driven community grounded in the four core tenets of scholarship, leadership, service, and brotherhood/sisterhood. Supported by Student Leadership Development, FSL organizations provide students with opportunities to develop as ethical leaders, pursue academic excellence, engage in meaningful service and philanthropy, and form lifelong connections rooted in shared purpose and belonging.

With over 1,800 undergraduate members across 30+ chapters, Fraternity & Sorority Life represents a diverse cross-section of the William & Mary student body. Our community is structured through four governing councils and their executive boards, which support chapter operations, leadership development, and community-wide initiatives. In addition, an interfraternal honor organization recognizes excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service, reinforcing a culture of accountability and achievement.

Student Leadership Development

Professional staff within Student Leadership Development partner closely with student leaders to provide advising, education, and oversight, ensuring that chapters operate in alignment with university policies and shared community standards. Together, students and staff work to foster an inclusive environment that encourages collaboration across councils, responsible decision-making, and continuous growth at both the individual and organizational levels.

Through campus involvement, service projects, philanthropic efforts, and leadership opportunities, Fraternity & Sorority Life plays an active role in advancing the mission and values of William & Mary. Members are challenged to think critically about their impact, support one another’s success, and contribute positively to the university and surrounding communities — both during their time on campus and long after graduation.
