About

William & Mary is committed to inclusive excellence. Building on our core value of diversity, we strive to be a place where equity and inclusion are integral parts of all that we do. We work to create a community that is representative of individuals with different backgrounds, talents and skills. We work to ensure that William & Mary is a place where all faculty, staff, students and alumni feel supported and affirmed.

From classroom discussions and study abroad experiences, to equitable and transparent recruitment, hiring and promotion processes, inclusive excellence is our focus. This work is not aligned with a single office, but the shared responsibility of all. We define diversity in its broadest terms and celebrate how this makes William & Mary a better institution.

"One of my core beliefs is that diversity drives innovation. When we can unite a diverse group of people, as we can at William & Mary — from different nations, economic backgrounds, ethnicities, identities in many registers — the result is a freshness of thought and an academic curiosity that is unparalleled. It promises that we find new, workable solutions to age-old problems, quickly and with greater sophistication, and that we learn more about ourselves along the way. We appreciate anew the different ways of knowing and of being in the world and their positive impact on teaching, learning and research.

William & Mary should be a place where everyone can thrive and contribute intellectually and we all have a stake in ensuring the kind of inclusive culture we want on our campus. We need to approach inclusion work as a community because efforts this important to the mission of the institution will be most successful when we pursue them together. We must all continue identifying barriers to full inclusion and work together on the most effective ways to surmount challenges to diversity."
