More information about CRE Specialist role

What does a CRE Specialist do?

As a specialist, you get to do a little bit of everything. Your training will focus on highly specialized skills in communication and conflict resolution that you will apply in a variety of settings. You'll also have the opportunity to take on projects related to research and marketing as you help grow the impact of CRE's services and resources across campus.

Work may include:

  • Creating and presenting educational workshops and trainings on a range of communication and conflict resolution topics
  • Developing & executing dialogue-related programming across campus
  • Coaching meeting with students to plan for good conflict conversations and navigating difficult situations
  • Mediating cases related to interpersonal conflict, group dynamics, relational harm, and other issues
  • Learning about conflict needs on campus through research projects
  • Connecting students to CRE resources and services through marketing & outreach
  • Representing Conflict Resolution & Education at presentations, fairs, and other campus events

What’s the time commitment?

Initial Training

Specialists will be required to complete 20 hours of initial training with their cohort during the spring 2026 semester, including observing casework. Initial training will take place January 23-25 (exact times TBA).

Monthly Commitment

Specialists are expected to work 15 hours per month. This time includes bi-monthly all-team meetings, monthly one-on-one check-ins with the director, and time allotted for casework and trainings. Caseloads vary – some months are busier than others!

Pre-Orientation

Pre-orientation is a busy training time for CRE. Specialists must be able to return to campus early to prep and assist with the delivery of these trainings. Exact dates will be provided upon hire.

What will I get out of the experience?

Practical Leadership Experience

Conflict resolution is one of the skills we most expect from our leaders, yet is consistently undertrained in most leadership development programming. As a specialist, you’ll develop expertise that carries into your own orgs, classes, relationships, and beyond.

Marketable Professional Skills

The soft skills of emotional intelligence, connection, communication, group dynamics, and conflict management are some of the most valuable skills in any workplace, and the ones most sought after by executive leadership. Training and experience in these areas is still relatively rare and enhances marketability for any professional path.

Make a Difference on Campus

Specialists play an integral role in the growth and development of the brand-new Conflict Resolution & Education office and help create a culture of good conflict on campus. Requests for CRE services often represent needs that traditionally go unmet by other university offerings. Because CRE does not sanction or investigate, we have flexibility to tailor processes to the needs of everyone involved. Serving as a specialist will allow you to support peers in challenging situations who have few other options.
