Our Program Goals

In addition to the W&M Civic & Community civic learning and action goals, we have the following goals.

For Volunteer's Experiential Learning 

  • Develop an understanding of positive youth development and implement practices with integrity
  • Delve into the root causes of education equity and implement their understanding to positive impact the issue, either individually with their direct work with young people or indirectly through large-scale systems work
  • Exhibit a dynamic understanding of key education issues and practices impacting how they serve inclusively throughout the community
  • Make connections between the social and education policy and practice

For Student Leader's Capacity Development

  • Collaborate in ways that allows roles and responsibilities to evolve and grow, offering immediate and ongoing feedback that is specific and helps team members understand their strengths and areas of improvement
  • Focus on depth over breadth of learning, encouraging themselves and others to delve into root causes, ask open-ended questions, engage with power and systems, and prioritize community
  • Use a growth mindset, effort-focused praise, and working outside of comfort zones
  • Cultivate their passion or spark, feeling confident in their work and purpose, and working to create pathways for themselves and others to pursue their interests long-term
