Through Opportunity Flourish AmeriCorps Program's Sparks!, you will mentor middle schoolers as they explore passion projects and discover more about what they love.

Content Lead & Mentor - 300 Hours

The Sparks! Content Lead & Mentor will develop youth’s (12-18) social emotional skills through high quality project-based activities that allow adolescents to explore their interests and build their sense of purpose, sense of self, and motivation to achieve their goals.

Commitment Required:

Member will serve at the Minimum Time level (300 hours at approximately 8-10 hours per week) during the academic year (September through May).

  • Three weekly mentoring shifts: between 3pm-5pm (Hornsby) for 20 weeks of programming throughout the academic year
  • Weekly reflection and coaching sessions
  • Complete training plan which includes onboarding on periodic training throughout the service term, up to 60 hours.
  • Complete additional training for the Behavioral Health Technician (BHT), Behavioral Health Technician Assistant (BHT-A), or Community Health Worker credentials
  • Participate in 9/11 and Martin Luther King, Jr. Days of Service

Responsibilities include:

Direct Service 45%

  • Participate in three weekly after-school sessions, including delivering inclusion activities, social-emotional lessons, and Project Discovery activities that support young people identifying and exploring their passion
  • Utilize youth development group management strategies and build physically and emotionally safe learning environment
  • Recruit participants at school events during traditional school hours as well as during out-of-school time
  • Participate in 9/11 and Martin Luther King, Jr. Days of Service

Preparation & Support 35%

  • Work with staff to develop and deliver high-quality social-emotional programming using passion projects in alignment with The Portrait for Thriving Youth
  • Prepare and facilitate curriculum prep sessions under the guidance of program staff
  • Record and review mentor notes after each session, escalating those items requiring additional support and attention
  • Participate in weekly reflection or coaching sessions
  • Collect and record data on participant engagement and progress 
  • May drive a W&M van or personal vehicle to and from service site(s)

Training 20%

  • Complete year-long training plan which includes assigned training on curricula and the developmental needs of youth, up to 60 hours
  • Complete the training for the Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) or Behavioral Health Technician Assistant (BHT-A) credentials

Youth Engagement Liaison & Mentor - 300 Hours 

The Sparks! Youth Engagement Liaison & Mentor will plan recruitment events and serve as the lead youth advocate to ensure optimal youth engagement, development and satisfaction throughout the life cycle of their program involvement. They will ensure that the mentoring team develops youths (12-18) social emotional skills and provides opportunities for active engagement in ways that build youths’ sense of purpose, sense of self, and motivation to achieve their goals and help them explore their passions.

Commitment Required:

Support Specialist & Mentor - 300 Hours

The Sparks! Mentor & Support Specialist supports young people in self-regulation, identifying a sense of purpose, building self-esteem, harnessing their agency, and developing positive self-identity through an exploration of their passions.  In addition, the Sparks! Mentor & Support Specialist will provide programming support to the program. The mentor is directly responsible for engaging in prosocial activities during out-of-school time hours to support youth in overcoming mental and behavioral health challenges.

Commitment Required

Member will serve at Minimum Time level (300 hours at approximately 10-12 hours per week) during the academic year (September through May). 

  • Three weekly mentoring shifts: between 3pm-5pm for 20 weeks of programming throughout the academic year
  • Weekly reflection or coaching sessions
  • Maintain regular office hours 
  • Participate in community outings
  • Complete additional training for the Behavioral Health Technician (BHT), Behavioral Health Technician Assistant (BHT-A) credentials, or Community Health Worker credential
  • Complete training plan which includes onboarding on periodic training throughout the service term, up to 60 hours.
  • Participate in 9/11 and Martin Luther King, Jr. Days of Service

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist with program planning, communications, and logistics 
  • Complete mentor notes after each session
  • Attend weekly curriculum prep sessions
  • Work with staff to coordinate optimal plans for each young person.
  • May drive a W&M van or personal vehicle to and from service site(s)

Training 20%

  • Complete training plan which includes onboarding on periodic training throughout the service term, up to 60 hours.
  • Complete the training for the Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) or Behavioral Health Technician Assistant (BHT-A) credentials
  • Complete assigned training on curricula and the developmental needs of youth and their families during the adolescent childhood years.

Sparks Mentor - 100 Hours

The Sparks! Mentor supports young people in self-regulation, identifying a sense of purpose, building self-esteem, harnessing their agency as well as forming and maintaining a positive self-identity through an exploration of their passions. The mentor is directly responsible for engaging in prosocial activities during out-of-school time hours to support youth in overcoming mental and behavioral health challenges.

Member will serve at Abbreviated Time level (100 hours at approximately 3-5 hours per week) during the academic year (September through May).

  • Two weekly mentoring shift between 3pm-5pm for 20 weeks of programming throughout the academic year
  • Weekly reflection or coaching sessions
  • Complete training plan which includes onboarding on periodic training throughout the service term, up to 20 hours.
  • Complete additional training for the Behavioral Health Technician (BHT), Behavioral Health Technician Assistant (BHT-A), or Community Health Worker credentials
  • Participate in 9/11 and Martin Luther King, Jr. Days of Service

Responsibilities include:

Direct Service 50%

  • Provide high quality project-based learning activities during out-of-school time hours that are in alignment with the Portrait for Thriving Youth
  • Participate in 9/11 and Martin Luther King, Jr. Days of Service

Preparation & Support 30%

  • Complete mentor notes after each session 
  • Attend weekly curriculum prep sessions
  • Work with the site supervisor and advisors to coordinate personalized plans for each young person
  • Participate in weekly reflection or coaching sessions

Training 20%

  • Complete training plan which includes onboarding on periodic training throughout the service term, up to 20 hours.
  • Complete training on curricula and the developmental needs of youth and their families during the adolescent childhood years. including Youth Mental Health First Aid
  • Complete the training for the Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) or Behavioral Health Technician Assistant (BHT-A) credentials

Qualifications

Required:

  • Citizenship or permanent residency status (Green Card)
  • High school graduate or GED certification
  • 17 years of age or older
  • Pass the Criminal History Check
  • Interest or experience working with young people 

Preferred:

  • Experience working in education or youth development
  • Desire to enter the mental health field 
  • Driver’s License

Education Award and Living Allowance

For 300 hour members:

  • Education Award estimated, based on 2025-26: Minimum Time: $1,565.08
  • Living allowance: $4,050

For 100 hour members:

  • Education award, estimated, based on 2025-26 Abbreviated Time: $416.17
  • Living allowance: $1,375

Background Checks
