W&M Board re-elects Todd A. Stottlemyer '85 rector

The William & Mary Board of Visitors today re-elected alumnus Todd A. Stottlemyer ’85 as William & Mary’s rector.
Stottlemyer, who was appointed to the Board in 2011, has served as rector since July 2013 when he was first elected to a two-year term. H. Thomas Watkins III ’74 was elected vice rector and Sue H. Gerdelman ’76 was elected secretary.
Robert E. Scott J.D. ’68 and Thomas R. Frantz ’70, J.D. ’73, M.L.T. ’81 served the past two years as vice rector and secretary, respectively.
“Todd Stottlemyer has been an extraordinarily effective rector. He is a natural leader who commands great respect throughout the William & Mary family and throughout the Commonwealth. It is W&M’s very good fortune that he’s agreed to continue leading the Board,” said President Taylor Reveley. “We are also fortunate to have Tom Watkins and Sue Gerdelman willing to serve the Board, as Bob Scott and Tom Frantz have done so well.”
The rector serves as chair of the Board of Visitors. Stottlemyer will officially begin the new term on July 1, 2015.
“I am grateful for the confidence bestowed upon me by my fellow Board members,” Stottlemyer said. “We’ve made great progress in recent years at the Alma Mater of the Nation. There are many bold efforts underway. I look forward to working with our faculty, students, staff, my colleagues on the Board, and President Reveley so that we can build on that momentum.”

Stottlemyer graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a bachelor’s degree in government. After receiving his law degree from Georgetown University in 1991, Stottlemyer went on to a successful career in the technology sector.
Washington Smart CEO magazine recognized Stottlemyer as one of their 20 most admired CEOs in the Washington D.C. area. He has held a number of executive posts, serving as president, chief executive officer, chief financial officer and a former business owner. Most recently, he served as CEO of Acentia, an information technology and management consulting company.
Stottlemyer has remained connected to his alma mater and has experience in higher education leadership across the Commonwealth. He has returned to William & Mary several times to give guest lectures on entrepreneurship. Stottlemyer previously served on the Board of Advisors for W&M’s Thomas Jefferson Program in Public Policy and the Athletic Educational Foundation, and is a former member of the William & Mary Washington Council and the Foundation Board.
Among his accomplishments since being appointed to the Board in 2011, Stottlemyer has led efforts for William & Mary to build a sustainable financial foundation. First as chair of the Board’s finance committee and later as rector, led development and implementation of the William & Mary Promise. The new operating model was adopted by the Board in April 2013.
H. Thomas Watkins III ‘74
Watkins, of Lake Forest, IL, received his undergraduate degree in business administration and accounting from William & Mary and his MBA from the University of Chicago. His father, Hays Watkins, was a member of the Board from 1984 to 1993, and served as Rector from 1987 to 1993.
At W&M, Tom Watkins was a member of the Tribe football team. He went on to a distinguished career in health sciences and services. Watkins most recently served as president and CEO at Human Genome Sciences from 2004 to 2012. Previously, he served as president of TAP Pharmaceutical Products and worked for Abbott Laboratories in a number of positions in the pharmaceutical products, diagnostics and health systems divisions.
Watkins previously served as chair of the William & Mary Foundation Board of Trustees. He is also a board member of the William & Mary Business School Foundation. Watkins was appointed to the Board of Visitors in 2013.
Sue H. Gerdelman ‘76
Gerdelman received her undergraduate degree in elementary education from William & Mary and taught school for six years in Washington State. She later worked at the White House as an executive assistant to the Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism and as associate director of the President's National Economic Council.
Gerdelman is the former chair of the William & Mary Foundation, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation and currently serves as chair of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, Inc., the private affiliate. In 2011, Gerdelman received the Alumni Medallion, the highest honor given by the William & Mary Alumni Association.
