Catron Scholars show opens in Andrews Gallery

A show featuring five undergraduate Catron Scholarship recipients opens Tuesday, Nov. 17, in the Andrews Gallery. The free gallery behind Phi Beta Kappa in Andrews Hall is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
A reception will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19, in the gallery.
“We hope that the campus and local communities will join us on Thursday to celebrate the work done by this outstanding group of student artists,” said, Lisa Grimes, associate director of the Roy R. Charles Center, which awards the scholarships.
The Catron Scholarship was established in honor of Louis E. Catron, professor of theatre emeritus, who taught and directed productions in the theatre department for 36 years.
The scholarships support the artistic growth of talented students in the creative and performing arts through off-campus educational experiences in the United States or abroad.
“We are exceptionally proud of our art and art history Catron Scholars,” said Elizabeth Mead, Art and Art History chair and Class of 1963 Term Distinguished Associate Professor. “This unique scholarship allows our students to pursue individual research projects that enhance our curricular offerings. Every one of our Catron Scholars has produced a significant body of independent work.”
The 2015 Catron Scholars include:
- Beatrice Chessman ’16, awarded for figure drawing in Florence, Italy
- Stephanie Faucher ’16, awarded for film production immersion in New York City
- Kirsten Halvorsen ’17, awarded for a children's book illustration course at Rhode Island School of Design
- Kareem Obey ’16, awarded for a architecture foundations program in Copenhagen, Denmark
- Zoë Powell ’16, awarded for a Cub Creek Foundation residency in Appomattox, Virginia
The fund encourage students through experiences at venues outside of the William & Mary curriculum and departmental programs.
The exhibition runs through Thursday, Dec. 3.
