About the Program
Biochemistry is for students who are interested in the interdisciplinary study of living organisms through their chemical processes. A combination of biology and chemistry courses will provide you with a solid foundation for scientific thinking and insight into the complexity of biological processes at the cellular and molecular level. If you are looking to go into a career in medicine or life sciences research, having an educational background in biochemistry will set you up for success.
Path of Study
Applied Learning
-
Courses
Take upper-level elective options such as Microbiology (BIOL 306), Immunology (BIOL 437) and Bioinorganic Chemistry (CHEM 419).*
-
Research
Work with biology or chemistry faculty on research with the opportunity to be published. A recent paper investigated potential overlooked dietary benefits of chlorophyll.
-
Student Activities
Join groups such as the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology or take part in seminars by the chemistry and biology departments.
Alumni Highlight
William Carlos Noel II '23 is a M.D. candidate at Harvard Medical School. While at William & Mary, he was a self-designed social justice in medicine major with a biochemistry minor. He presented at the American Society of Biochemistry 2023 annual meeting. He also studied N2a neuronal cells as part of research with Professor Shantá Hinton on understanding neurological disorders.
