Focus where your feet are, and everything will take care of itself. That’s been a guiding philosophy for Joe Brady ’13 as he climbed the ladder in the football coaching profession. An award-winning offensive strategist with a reputation for success, he aspires to someday lead a team, following the example of Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott ’98 and Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin ’95, L.H.D. ’08. Through it all, he has learned to be rooted in the present.
“If you focus so much about where you want to be, you're not going to do as great at the job that you're at,” Joe says.
He rose to stardom as one of the architects of LSU’s record-breaking offense in 2019, winning the Broyles Award as college football’s top assistant coach before making the leap to the NFL as the Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator. Joe joined the Bills as a quarterbacks coach in 2022 and was promoted to interim offensive coordinator near the end of the 2023 season. In the role full-time in 2024, he helped lead the offense as the team claimed its fifth straight AFC East Division title. He credits his time at William & Mary with preparing him for the challenges of coaching professional football.
“There was a lot of time in the business school or in Swem Library getting ready for a paper or a final. Nothing's different in this profession,” Joe says. “I'm getting ready for game day on Sunday, and I’m just doing that same preparation.”
