For Zeta Kromah, a soccer ball is far more than a symbol of her beloved sport. It’s a gateway to education, community and opportunity in her native Liberia.
When she returned home for the winter holidays in December 2025, she’d already decided to channel her own William & Mary undergraduate journey into a support system for youth.
That decision blossomed into Tribe Stars, a community program offering mentorship, academic guidance and athletic training to young people in and around the Liberian capital.
The program reached over 400 young people in its first summer. Soccer players learned civil engagement and academic skills alongside soccer fundamentals. Donations from the W&M community and funds from the Hixon Scholarship Enrichment Endowment helped supply each participant with a soccer jersey, shorts and a backpack filled with school supplies.
The roots of Kromah’s idea come with green and gold ties. Kromah graduated from LEAD Monrovia Football Academy, founded by W&M alumnus Will Smith ’14 following his research through William & Mary’s Global Research Institute.
LEAD inspired Kromah to apply for W&M, where she now plays as an outside back for the Tribe women’s soccer team and receives a Hixon Family Enrichment Scholarship.
This is just the beginning, according to Kromah.
“We want every kid possible in Liberia to know that we see them, appreciate them and want to support them,” she said.
