Jane Church Horvath ’86

Former Chief Privacy Officer at Apple

According to Jane Church Horvath, William & Mary is largely to thank for the trajectory of her career. The university taught her to work hard, challenge herself and take risks. "If I had to give a piece of advice to current students, it would be to take the road less traveled," she says. "What you are doing in college should be a baseline. Take classes that interest you, and don't think that you will get locked into one particular career path."

Jane encourages students to use college as a time of exploration, and reminds us that the career in which you end up may not exist yet. Her career — privacy law — didn't exist when she graduated from William & Mary. It didn't even exist when she graduated from law school.

Jane is now a partner at Gibson Dunn and is co-chair of the firm's Privacy, Cybersecurity and Data Innovation Practice Group. Previously, as the chief privacy officer at Apple, Jane was responsible for overseeing Apple's compliance with global privacy laws, as well as working internally and externally on developing issues related to privacy. Prior to joining Apple as their first privacy legal lead, Jane was the global privacy counsel at Google and the first U.S. privacy counsel.
