Ewell Concert Series kicks off with Tomas Lozano performance

The College of William and Mary’s Ewell Concert Series kicks off this weekend with a performance of Hispanic ballads by singer, musician and scholar Tomas Lozano.
The concert, which will feature Lozano singing in Castilian, Galician, Catalan and Sephardic, is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Ewell Recital Hall. The event is free and open to the public, but donations will be accepted to benefit the Ewell Concert Series, which is the only remaining concert series at the College.
Lozano is a member of two musical groups, Viva la Pepa and Trio Lococó. In addition to singing, he plays folk, traditional, and medieval music on the guitar and hurdy-gurdy and has performed at music festivals throughout Europe and North America. He makes his own instruments, and he lectures at colleges across the United States.
Saturday’s concert at William & Mary is sponsored by the Reves Center for International Studies, the W&M Middle Eastern Music Ensemble, the Music in American Culture Series and Hispanic Studies. Following the event, a reception will be held at La Tienda on Jamestown Road.
The concert caps off an eventful week for Lozano at William & Mary in which he interacted with students and faculty from multiple disciplines.
On Wednesday, he participated in a rehearsal of the Middle Eastern Music Ensemble. The next day, he gave a lecture on the music of the missions in New Mexico to Music Chair Anne Rasmussen's “Worlds of Music” class. Thursday afternoon, he presented the same lecture as part of the Music in American Culture Lecture Series.
Prior to the concert tomorrow, he will meet with Hispanic Studies Professor George Greenia’s students to film an interview in Spanish.
The next concert in the Ewell series will feature the Kruger Brothers, a bluegrass trio. That event is slated for Nov. 18 at 8 p.m. in the Williamsburg Library Theatre.
The series continues in 2012 with performances by the Countertop Ensemble and the Repast Baroque Ensemble in February. In April, William & Mary’s own Anna Kijanowska will perform with Sharon Roffman. That same month, the series ends with a performance by pianist Stephen Drury.
