Emergency Response Guide

For Faculty, Staff and Students

This guide is to assist the campus community in responding to emergency situations.

Emergency Situations

Fire

Activate the fire alarm & call 911

Only use a fire extinguisher if:

  • You're trained
  • The fire is small
  • Your exit pathway is clear
Evacuate & gather at the muster point

Medical

For serious injury or illness:

  • Call 911 immediately
  • If trained, provide first aid
  • Have someone retrieve an AED
  • Stay until help arrives
  • Send someone to escort first responders

Gas leak/ Fumes/ Vapor

Evacuate the area immediately

Activate the fire alarm & call 911 from a safe location

Reenter only after first responders declare the area safe

Hazardous Materials

Don't try to clean it up unless you're trained & equipped

  • Evacuate the area immediately
  • Call 911 for uncontrolled spills
  • Call EH&S (757)221-1643 for all other concerns

Shelter in Place

Stay Put. Stay Safe.

If told to shelter in place:

  • Stay indoors
  • Close and lock all doors and windows
  • Monitor official alerts
  • Don't leave until officials say it's safe

Active Threat/ Active Shooter

RUN. HIDE. FIGHT.

  • RUN - Get away if you can
  • HIDE - Lock doors, silence phones
  • FIGHT - As a last resort, defend yourself

Call 911 when safe. 

Stay alert. Stay Safe.

Severe Weather

Know the risks. Be Ready.

Have a plan and a safe place to go.

Know the difference between a Watch and a Warning.

Power/ Utility Failure

Stay calm & assist others

Exit the area if needed

If there's danger - call 911
