Monique Williams

Meet Monique 

As the Director, Monique leads initiatives that foster belonging, cultural celebration, and leadership development, especially for historically underrepresented students. A licensed school psychologist with nearly two decades of experience in education, counseling, disability services, and student affairs, Monique brings a holistic and justice-oriented approach to her work in higher education. Her research and advocacy focus on the social consequences of special education, the pushout of marginalized students, and the implementation of culturally responsive practices to promote healing and success. Monique has led or contributed to research on antiracist hiring, student belonging at predominantly white institutions, and the experiences of Black women in counselor education.

Monique is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. where she actively serves in areas of social action, political and economic awarness, and mental health. She is an active member of the Virginia Academy of School Psychologists, the National Association of School Psychologists, NASPA: Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, and the NAACP. She also serves as the Strategic Planning Chair of the Virginia State Police - Youth of Virginia Speak Out on Traffic Safety (YOVASO) Advisory Board, the James Madison University Campus Suicide Prevention Center of Virginia High School Transitions Advisory Committee, and Chesapeake Public Schools Special Education Advisory Committee.   

Personally, Monique is the mother of one son (Jayce). Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, going on nature walks, attending sporting events and festivals, volunteering, and relaxing with a good book.
