GRD 560: Teach From Scratch

Summary

A course to support grad students passionate about teaching and interested in learning more about pedagogy.

Full Description

In this short course on teaching and course design, graduate students learn the basics of university-level teaching. Students complete four short asynchronous modules from STLI’s College Teaching Essentials, Level 1, and attend in-person sessions to explore and practice the topics covered. Students who complete all components of the course receive a Credly microcredential from STLI, which looks great on a C.V. Offered as a 9-week course in the fall and as a one-week boot camp in the summer. Offered in partnership between the Studio for Teaching and Learning Innovation and the Graduate Center.

Teach From Scratch Objectives:

This program is designed to equip graduate students with the knowledge and skills to design and teach course materials effectively in their respective fields at the college level. The program introduces fundamental concepts and practices. Students who complete TFS will feel better prepared to design course assignments and engage students in learning. Additionally, this program provides an opportunity to connect, exchange, collaborate, and support one another as a cohort.

Learn to apply evidenced-based strategies in your teaching. Topics include:

  • Engaging students in class
  • Crafting learning objectives that suit your goals for the class
  • Aligning your learning objectives with your assignments
  • Making effective and well-aligned assessments
  • Plus, an overview of the landscape of teaching at a college or university that answers common questions

Students will complete four asynchronous modules from STLI’s College Teaching Essentials, Level 1, online course and attend in-person sessions to explore and practice the topics covered. Plus, you’ll have the option to receive a Credly microcredential from STLI.
