The Global Research Institute’s roots go back to 2003, when two students approached professors Mike Tierney and Sue Peterson with questions about how research is applied beyond the university.

These student questions became two research projects, led by the students in collaboration with faculty and external practitioners: TRIP (Teaching, Research, and International Policy) and AidData. Over the next 20 years GRI supported dozens of additional student / faculty research teams across a range of disciplines, catalyzing over $100 million in external funding, producing peer reviewed research in top national journals, and driving insights used by governments, non-profits, and community partners.

The work of the original GRI projects continues, now spun out to new homes in the university. They continue to produce high-quality applied research that shape policy and practice.
